Question From Backup Assistant to BB

Hopefully someone can help me with this because I'm losing my mind.

So I am a new Blackberry user and I just upgraded with Verizon from LG's "The V" to the 8130 Pearl. The reason my old phone was replaced was because the charging port had become useless. Therefore, the phone wouldn't charge and also could not transfer data. I had downloaded Backup Assistant from "Get it Now." However, since Blackberry doesn't have that feature, I can't download my contacts to my Pearl.

Verizon tells me that my only choice is to open Backup Assistant on my account page and simply re-enter all of my contacts. My complaint is I have over 300 contacts and no time to type them all back in. Does anyone have any ideas of how I could somehow import my contacts to my BB?

I don't have any personal experience with Backup Assistant, but does it have any Export options? If so, it may be best to try a CSV export, then import to Outlook, or another compatible program that can sync with BlackBerry's Desktop Manager. I'm not sure if this helps at all, but if there is no import option, I don't know of any better options, besides maybe entering manually into a program, such as Outlook, and then performing a Sync.

Yeah, I had thought of that also. Backup Assistant doesn't have an export option. However you can view the list in a rather simple printing form that will paste into a program such as excell. From there I have tried to save it as a CSV file but that brings up mapping issues when I try to import it into Outlook. I have also tried to import it into Outlook as an Excell file but I keep getting an error message saying that I need to name the ranges that I am trying to import.

I can't seem to get by that error message.

I don't think there is any other way. VZW locks down what can be transfered via bluetooth so you cannot send vcards and since there is no export on backup assistant the only way is manually doing it.

You can copy and paste the contact info into Outlook and sync the device afterwards, that way you don't have to type it all. It will still be slower than exporting but faster than typing it.

    LOL, timing was the same.

Could you sync with outlook though? That would be the easiest and fastest way to transfer contacts to a BB. Or any similar PIM client.

I agree with Red - Outlook is your best solution - suggest you keep working that excel file. I recently imported an excel file to contacs and it took a few tries to get all the fields right but it is "do-able"

If you created a CSV file and know the mapping, you can import the File into your BB Directly using the sync function of Desktop manager. You will probably have to remap the csv file when setting up the sync options. Be sure to use the ASCII option for syncing settings.

I will keep trying to make that Excel file import into Outlook. I think that will probably be my best bet because mapping the excell file as a CSV file is a little extensive.

Any input into what fields I need that Excel file to include would be great. Thanks for all the suggestions!

I beleive I used the same field names as Outook, first name, last name, company, business phone, etc. If you have contacts stored in Outlook now export a file and see if that helps .

Re: From Backup Assistant to BB

I'm not sure if this helps, but here's a butchered sample CSV file format, utilizing notepad. I've verified that it imports fine to Outlook:

    "First Name","Middle Name","Last Name","Mobile Phone","Other Fax","Other Phone","Pager","Home Phone","Business Phone"
    "Jim","Bob","Jones","5555555555","","","","5555552 155","5555552156"

If you look, each comma separated value corresponds in the order at the top. For example: Mobile phone is the 4th value, so it will always be the 4th value in quotes for any lines with data.

It may be more of a pain than entering it manually into outlook, but if you wanted to pursue a CSV import, you can try the syntax I have above, and save in CSV format.

Thanks so much! I finally got my Excel document that was saved in CSV format to import into Outlook. The mapping was easier than I was anticipating and I was just looking at it a little differently. All of my contacts are now in Outlook in the correct order so I just need to Sync them to my BB which I'm sure will be easy enough. Thanks again!
