    Free unlocking from TMobile

I just wanted to throw this out there for anyone that did not know.

I was under the impression that I had to either unlock my phone myself somehow or pay for it, but I was wrong.

So for anyone that does not know if you just call Tmobile and ask them to get you an unlock code for your Pearl they will do it with 72hrs...huh who would of thought just to go right to the source and ask them directly...not me I guess.

Are in the US? I wasn't getting anything like this from T-Mobile in UK, but maybe I was just speaking to the wrong person.

Yes I am, I just told them I was traveling and they actually SUGGESTED that I unlock it I did not even have to mention unlocking, and I played dumb to what it was all about

I would suggest not talking to customer suport but to talk to a Blackberry specialist if possible

The only catch is that your account must be active for 90 days before your request for the unlock code will be issued.

I've had my phone unlocked through them and they need to verify that the phone you want unlocked is the phone you have registered on their network. So they will want your phone's IMEI number. Its quite simple, but I found out that the unlock code only works for that phone even if its the same type.

My TMO Pearl is no longer active, I switched to Cingular and now have their Pear. Can I still unlock an inactive phone through a third party or does the phone have to be activated to unlock it. Also, I have heard of issues where someone bought a phone on Ebay and when they unlocked it, could not register it through BIS because it had already been registered at one time by someone else. How difficult will it be for me to resolve this, is it something RIM has to do? I would like to give my Pearl to my son to use on Cingular but just wondering what is going to be involved.

    Thanx

You can get the imei and pin released by Tmobile so it is available to register on the BIS. You have to call and talk to there blackberry support and tell them you want it imei and pin cleared so that your wife or someone can use it. Make someone up. They will clear it. As far as unlocking an inactive phone i dont believe they will give you the code. You will probably have to pay to get it unlocked if it can be done.

Sorta the point -- you're going on holiday or a biz trip from here (USA) to Hong Kong. You love your BB, but don't want to pay the extreme cost (it's really expensive) of using your T-Mobile SIM in HK (which will register on '3' network there) to handle phone calls. Unlocking your phone means you can pick up a cheap PEOPLES pre-pay sim, slap it in your phone and make calls for ~-0.06 - ~0.10 HKD cents (about 1 or 2 cents US) a minute on average, and basic WAP usage is cheap as well (I went almost two weeks on a single $78 HKD prepay SIM).

My trick is the get there, register the pre-pay and get your local number, then call your USA voicemail and leave a new message like "If you need me, my number in HK is +011852...". Since your local (T-Mo) SIM is not in a handset and active, callers will immediately go to your voicemail without a ringing wait. The downside is that you don't get any vmails left, but your callers should be smart enough to not have left one.

i heard that unlocking your phone allows you to set any music you upload to your phone as a ringtone instead of just downloaded tones, is that true?

You don't need to unlock the Pearl to set any music file as your ringtone.

Simply navigate to your media folder, find a song on your SD card, push the menu button an choose "Set as Phone Tune".

I've even made my own ringtones by combining sound effects clips together in Audacity (freeware sound editor) and exporting as an MP3 to my Pearl. My current one is a combo of the Star Trek TOS communicator sound with Worf saying "Incoming message, Captain". I know, a little geeky, but hey :-)

Uh guys, it's the law that any cellular provider unlock your phone at your request within 72 hours. Google it - I'm serious =)
