    Moot point if your company pays for it. If you're self-employed, it's a business expense tax write-off. If you use it for company purposes and they don't reimburse you for it, it's still a tax write off. It works so well, I'd pony up either way. I tried them all before settling on this one as I also despise the subscription model. Ah well.

    You can download OTA. Just register for the trial on their web site.

    You enter your expenses and organize the initial report using the software on your BB. When ready to submit, you transfer the data to their server. You can then log in and further edit/tweak as necessary. Then you can invite your accounting person to log in and retrieve the report, or you can export to a local PDF, Excel, Text, etc. file and turn that in to your employer.
