If you don't enable it, you won't be able to use it as a storage device on your computer, pretty much meaning you won't be able to drag and drop files into the folders.

It activates the chip inside the 8100 and creates default folders on the chip for music, video, pics and ringtones.

Also, it then allows the phone to be connected to the PC with a USB cord and then open/access the folders through XP Explorer rather than Desktop Manager.

This feature could come in handy when at work, for example, you want to treat the Pearl's MicroSD card as a portable drive and transfer files to and from the Pearl. Without enabling mass storage mode, you would need DM to access the chip.

Lastly, transferring files directly through the PC to the Pearl is way faster than using Desktop Manager, speed wise and by not having to open Desktop Manager and connect through it.

Lastly, what's it to you? Just enable it.

SanFran, some people dont have the ability to do so without contacting their IT department ( like I did, on my work laptop!) and some probably wont allow it at all.

Re: Enabling mass storage on Pearl 8100

I clicked yes to mass storage and it wiped out my media ringtones. Anyone know where it could have gone? My rintone is a song that was on there and it still rings that song, so I'm guessing it's still somewhere in the pearl. I was also not able to get the downloaded songs on the media card to use as a phone ring. Any answers?

    Thank you!

I just noticed-when I go into options, advanced options then media card, it says
The media card is not available because Mass Storage Mode is currently in use.
    What does that mean?

Usually that means that you have some application still in "on" mode and it is using or reserving a spot on the chip. Do you have any program on, such as MP3, video, or pics?

Just because one presses the end key [key with red phone], does NOT mean a program is turned off.

To reset and make sure everything is off, remove and replace the battery. That is quicker than going through all the things you need to check to make sure everything is off.

    San Fran.
I can take a joke. I completely know you were joking. Had I not experienced what I stayed above, you would have heard the same response from me that you gave. . Just pointing out another reason why just enabling mass storage mode might be difficult for some . So take me off you list if thin skinned. Lol

Re: Enabling mass storage on Pearl 8100

What if I click "no" to "Do you want to enable mass storage" and also click (not on purpose) "do no ask again" ? How do I re-enable it?

Welcome! A bit more info would be helpful. Can you please post back your Windows OS and your Desktop Manager version (as well as where you got it). Also are you using a sd card or device memory? When you wrote that you connnected to the back and the front I assume you mean of your PC?

Post back when you can and we will try to help!

Question Re: Enabling mass storage on Pearl 8100

I have changed the settings in my Blackberry to enable mass storage mode.
When I connect to my PC it behaves just like it used to: A drive letter appear in Windows XP,
but when I try to browse it it says Please inset a Disk into drive F:
This was the same message I used to get with mass storage mode turned off.

There is an IT security policy on the device which is supplied by my work. But I am still able to change all of the mass storage options.

    Any ideas?

    Richard.
