In a the most simple form, EDGE runs from the GSM carrier's network signal using a cell tower. Wi-Fi uses wireless hot spots or your wireless sytem (router - if you have one at home) to operate.

Both phone calls and internet are available either way. T-Mobile has a plan option that allows for "free" calls on wi-fi if you subscribe to their $10/mo plan.

Not sure how to compare the speeds of the two - EDGE and wi-fi are probably fairly similar in speed.

jblackfish has hit on the main points of EDGE being through your carriers GSM network and WIFI being through a wireless hotspot or home router.

For most people, the difference is speed. EDGE is much slower than WIFI.

According to Wikipedia, the EDGE maximum speed is 236.8 kbit/s while to contrast, the maximum speed of an 802.11g network (WIFI) is 54 Mbit/sec. This means that WIFI is over 200x faster (theoretical maximums being used).

In short, browsing on WIFI is much faster than browsing on EDGE.
    As always, just my opinion...

Thanks, MJ. I should have been able to determine that wi-fi is faster since I browse on wi-fi (8320) fairly often. I could have at least compared it to my CDMA account (8330) to get an idea but I rarely use them at the same time or browse the same things...and really don't care that much.

Pretty-much all I care about is that they work when I want them too.

That is pretty much all that really matters!
