Lightbulb Downloadable MAPS (not map software, actual maps)

I noticed that sometimes my mapping software is SLOOOOOOOOWWWWW to download maps of the area I am in.

Are there any programs out there that would allow me to actually download maps of an area to my micro sd card, so i don't have to rely on the internet when i am using my gps??

if not, are there any brainiacs out there that could create this software/file? Doesn't that sound like a brilliant idea?! :-)

    Good Idea! !!!

I have spent many a minutes waiting blank-faced for the area to come up, sitting in my car, people staring... any ideas out there?

Yes. There is an application called TrekBuddy that does this. There are a couple of threads out there that talk about it, and include links to the tutorial.

Try this one, its got a post in there with links to the tutorial.

I've been getting around to loading up some maps I've made and testing it out.

If I can get some time I'll do it tonight. I'm on a field trip tomorrow with my son, so it'll be a good chance to field test trekbuddy and another app I found recently.

man, having downloadable telenav maps... that is the absolute best scenario, for those of us who don't mind the fees... (incidentally, t-mobile only charges $19.99/month for unlimted data) i LOVE telenav... all of the searchable features make it SO convenient when i am traveling... but i get so irritated with having to wait for the maps to download - ugh.. i SO appreciate the feedback from y'all. i actually did perform a search here but it looked like every result was for bb maps... thx again, all.

I am STUCK on the "atlas" creating part for the Trekbuddy.

In itself, I really like using Trekbuddy because I get fleeced $$ on data when I am roaming and this little app is super easy to use... Except for creating an "atlas" which makes my head hurt.

Can anyone explain this to me? http://www.linuxtechs.net/kruch/tb/f...opic.php?t=833
