data service unavaliable on a unlocked 8100

Hi everyone, i need help. i just got my Tmobile Blackberry Pearl (8100) unlocked over the weekend so i can move it over to my at&t plan. I put the at&t sim card in (which is a voice + 10mb/month data plan), and i get "data connection refused" when the phone boots. it works just fine for voice, and connects to the network just fine (shows cingular on the home screen).

is there no way to get my blackberry pearl to connect to at&t's data service on my phone? i should be able to, right? i thought i would as i have a 10mb data plan, which is more then enough for me as my typical monthly usage is 5mb a month under my unlimited plan.

i did no setup, and if some settings need adjusting, i would appreciate the help. i dont know what to change to convert my phone to connect to the at&t data service. currently its established through tmobile, and fires up just fine whenever i put my tmobile sim card back in, complete with my email address. perhaps i need to do some setting adjustments to adapt it to at&t?

i would REALLY appreciate if somebody could outline the steps to help me make this happen, if it can happen, or the 411 as to why it will not work if it is not possible with this unlocked tmobile 8100 phone.

*what i did try is Options/Advanced Options/Host Routing table, click the trackwheel and choose register now... and it does nothing. it wont seem to register.

    thanks guys!

If you have an unlocked/any-SIM phone, and have a valid SIM from your new Serivice Provider (AT&T), then it sounds like you've either not completed the necessary set-up steps, or you need to call AT&T and get them to 'switch on' your new package profile.

Hope that helps and good luck!

Does your AT&T account include a Blackberry Plan (not jsut a data plan but a Blackberry specific data plan)? Here are a few suggestions.

    1. Check under OPTIONS-Mobile Network and make sure that Data Services are ON and that Network Selection is AUTOMATIC.
    2. Go to OPTIONS -HOST ROUTING TABLE- MENU - REGISTER NOW to register your device with the network.
    3. Go to your ATT BIS web page (where you set up your email) or go to the icon on the phone "Set up internet email" and resend your service books.

EVen though the phone is unlocked, you will need to call At&t and add a Blackberry Plan (Not data package) to your existing plan, then (unless you have other phones on your plan that use it) drop the data plan, because 99% of the time, the blackberry plan covers everything that your data package plan did plus some.
I had to do this with t-mobile. Same exact problem. If you are a customer in good standing, they may even give you a discount, or in the case of mine, it was actually cheaper to have a blackberry than my regular phone with data package.

the plan is just a simple 600 minute + 10mb data plan. not specified for blackberries, but i thought data is data...

i did all you suggested... only there is no internet icon when i have my at&t sim card in (it comes back when i put my tmobile sim back in)... and when i do the setup the option to set up my email through the network is missing (its there on my tmobile sim).

the host routing table resend didnt work, and i cleared out all my service books too. didnt do anything at all...

will this not work? once again the sim is working as i can even dial in to my voicemail on at&t... just cant connect data wise.

In the UK, certainly with my package with O2, they give you two options:

    1. Pearl 8100 Handset free with contract/plan (e.g. Ł55 per month, gets you 200 SMS/texts, 1500 minutes, 100 Video messages etc.) plus Ł10 for an all-you-can-eat BlackBerry data/apps deal

    2. Same as above but a pay-as-you-play for the BB Apps part.

It makes sens to go for Option 1.

No data is NOT data when referring to blackberries. You MUST have a BB data plan in order to recieve data (email, internet access, BB messenger, ect). Call AT&T and order a BB plan that is sufficient to your needs and drop the 10mb data plan...no other way around it

i would but i'm on a promotional plan where i cant manage it. good advice but not applicable to me.

i have 10mb mmode access on my data services, which is tied in. from my question above, will this work with my blackberry, and if so how? (all i want to do is simply be able to send emails as i use my data on tmobile only for text message sending... for data you cant beat the price. its like adding on a 2k text messaging package for free with a 10mb plan.) need help getting this to work if possible as i must have data capability if i'm to use this at&t plan!

Once again, if you do not order a BB data plan, then you will have NO DATA...no exceptions. Sorry!

    What he said!

BB Apps are a separate type deal and need both ordering and acknowledging from your provider in order for them to be delivered and to work.

    Hope that helps.

    dam =(

why the crap does at&t charge $20 for a 1k text messaging plan??? they are pigs! verizon is like 1/2 that. if only the text plan was manageable... its extremely inconvenient to switch sim cards between voice and data.... forcing me to carry 2 phones and carry 2 services (which end up being cheeper then just adding voice on to my tmobile data plan.. $5 cheeper. dumb huh?)

I sympathise mate, I really do, and I'm glad I'm not held open to the vagaries of US provider pricing plans (content thereof) as they seem to be a nightmare. Over here (UK) you simply pick how much you want to spend each month, tell them what you want to see in your package (number of included voice mins, number of included SMS/texts, video messages etc.) and the handset comes free - invariably unlocked, so even if you decide to move providers your handset can come with you and any new provider simply sends you a new SIM - you even get to keep your phone number, regardless of which provider you move to.

I know it doesn't help, but I feel for ya mate. Good luck in sorting it out.

continued to look in to this plan of mine... i might actually be good to go... one of the features said :

    USAGE TYPE INCLUDEDUSEDREMAININGOVERAGEText/IM MessagingUnlimited3UnlimitedSMS EMPLOYEE UNLIMITED FREE - B

cool stuff. cant beat those employee plans. =)

one question... i tried to use sms text message to test on my blackberry... seems to not like email addresses... ONLY phone numbers. on any other cell i can text message to a email address though. is there a workaround for this, or will this pearl only sms to another wireless number?

That feature is only text messaging if I read it correctly. You will still need the BlackBerry Data Plan to send and receive email and picture messages. If you wanted to send an email message to whatever email @ tmo dot blackberry dot net, for example, that is considered email.
