    Confused

    Advertisement

    This afternoon at 12:47 I recieved a text message from "7077", one of the T-Mobile text addresses. It read "Free T-Mobile Msg: Power your Pearl OFF, then ON. Now you can access Picture and Instant Messaging and t-zones (see msg rates at t-mobile. com/shop/addons)." I was rather excited after reading this message, owning a blackberry for over 6 months (without a data plan) and have been quite upset that I couldn't instant message or recieve/send picture messages. Even without a data plan these services should have been provided. So I powered off my pearl, then back on. Nothing seemed to happen, I did it again.... and nothing. So I'm confused, obviously the text was refering to BB users without the data plan because data plan users already had those features. How can I access instant messaging and picture messaging? Is it because I bought my pearl before they started including the messaging service books? Help!

    Sounds like the BB enabler service. The reboot shoud have given you a t zones icon and a IM icon. Call TMO and have them reset the feature if you want it -- BE AWARE that messages cost 15 cents each - not free.

    15 cents even with unlimited text messaging? Thanks, I'll give them a call later today. Wish there was just something I could download to fix it...

    hello,
    i think with unlimited text/pic messaging it doesnt cost. but if you dont happen to have that add extra feature then its 15 cents for text messages and 25 cents for picture messaging. or that what it is/was with tmo. i have had the unlimited text/picture messaging for awhile, so i dont know if the price has gone up.

    No, unlimited text messaging is different, you have unlimited messages that you are paying for in that bundle.

    T-mobile has two Blackberry packages. One is Blackberry services and unlimited data. The other is Blackberry services with unlimited messaging. In fact, I believe they are called: Blackberry Unlimited w/Browsing and Blackberry Unlimited w/Messaging.

    Be careful what you choose because you need to make sure that you have the other plan if you plan on using the feature that is not included in your package.

    i.e. Make sure you have an the add-on data plan if you have the Blackberry Unlimited w/Messaging

    Reading your first post I assumed you did not have a messaging bundle (?). If you have unlimited text messaging then no, no charge. But the only new feature you got would be t zones (not a lot there) and IM (aim, etc).

    ...and picture messaging. Without the dataplan the service book is missing for picture messaging. The option to send/recieve a picture message has never shown up on my pearl. They said it was a glitch and would be fixed if I signed up for a data plan. However, in the original contract the Pearl said it included picture messaging and instant messaging. I guess they finally fixed the bug. But I don't have either of the clients and I don't know where to get them... Understand?

    Sparky,

    I am trying to understand what you are looking for....where are you looking for this option? When you take a photo and go to the mail icon do you get Send as MMS as an option? When you go to Messaging and hit menu is Compose MMS an option? I have not seen anywhere that this required a data plan but cannot swear to it...

    Now for IM there is indeed an Icon that you should see on your "dektop" or main screen. And that is not installed without the enabler package if you dont have a "data plan"

    Re: Confused

    The send MMS has never been there. I checked with a T-Mobile rep awhile ago and they said it's because I didn't have a data plan. People confirmed that for me on this forum awhile. The text I recieved from T-Mobile this morning led me to believe they fixed the problem and now I could use the services as promised. But I probablly have to download the service book for MMS and T-Mobile messenger service. Unfortunatly, the only means I have found to download either of them is through the blackberry itself. Seeing as how I don't have a data plan, that's impossible.

    no...I added enabler to a pearl with no data plan last week and all it took was a battery pull. Suggest you call 611 and speak to customer service...

    Yeah, you won't get a 'Picture messaging' icon or anything, it is just a sending option built into almost every phone. Like what Gary mentioned, "Send as MMS" is what you are looking for.

    Also, Instant Messaging (IM) and Text Messaging are two very different things. Text messaging will be included with your messaging plan and each message is seperate of themselves. You dont receive or veiw them as a conversation like you do with IM. IM is like AOL instant messenger, MSN messenger, etc. If you have used these types of messengers on PC before then you should see what I mean.

    To IM on your BB, you will need a IM client. There is one provided by T-mobile called OZ. This is the one that you have been told you wil automatically get on your phone. Once your data plan is setup correctly, pull the battery out of your phone ofr a few seconds then put it back in. You should see a new icon for Instant Messaging.

    I've never looked into it but I have been told that OZ actually uses text messages to send it's text messages. So you'd better have unlimited messaging if you use this.

    I would recommend you go to www.beejive.com and at least try out Jivetalk. Right now most people consider it to be the best IM client there is, and it is totally worth the money if you want to use IM. Remember this option does use your data plan, so an unlimited data plan is highly recommended.

    Does that clear things up a bit?

    Kortanis is correct. Instant Messaging (IM) on TMO will count against your messaging package just as if you sent a text message...

    @sparky
    Just saw your last post... Unless you have a Blackberry service plan you will not be able to utilize most of your phones features. It will be a phone. If you'd like to use your blackberry, drop a few bucks for the service plan.

    Also, you can text and picture message without any sort of plan, on any phone capable of doing it. You just get charged for each message. This is left that way to encourage people to try it out.

    Try taking a photo, don't save it or anything yet. Click your menu button, what entries starting with 'Send' do you have?

    @jloverq
    Jivetalk uses data. That's all I use, with no text messaging plan, I currently have 0 used text messages the the billing period. Jivetalk connects with its own server, thats part of why you have to pay, someone has to upkeep the server and keep everyone connected.
