How can you tell if you've actually shut down an application or whether it's just running in the background?

alt (bottom left corner) and back (right side of trackball).
HOLD alt down and press back key...this will show you what you have running. (kinda works like alt+tab on a pc)

note: messages, bb messenger, phone log, browser and home will not 'close'. they are always running in the background.

    AWSOME TIP!!! thanks cherrichiodo

although this answer might be a given....
would leaving applications open cause lag on the phone ? could that be a reason for the theme "phantom" having so much lag ?

    Re: Closing applications

the phantom theme is known (at least forum wide) for being a battery hog. the techies call it something else

but yes...having apps open instead of going to menu and scrolling to close, will cause lag and deflate battery life.

I am still new with the Pearl but you need to close most programs with the Menu key then choose close or the programs own quit/exit key.

If you just ESC or END out of them, like I was doing, they are still running usually.
