Can't obtain an unlock code for 8120

I'd appreciate any help folks could give me here on this one. I don't think it's the "usual" case of begging for an unlock code. This is a real headache.

I'm running into a roadblock with an 8120, trying to get it unlocked.

It came my way, thru eBay, a few weeks ago. It looks like it was originally a Cincinnati Bell Wireless device. I'm an AT&T customer.

When I put my AT&T (actually, it says Cingular) SIM in the 8120 I get a message on the top, "Invalid SIM Card" and my radio shows "SOS" mode.

I was able to get the device IMEI to the AT&T unlock group and they tell me it's (obviously) not an AT&T device. The suggest that it might be a T-Mobile device and to contact them.

    T-Mobile says, "it's not a T-Mobile device, sorry..."

I've tried CSR roulette at CBW a few times and they consistently tell me, "We don't unlock phones. If you want to use the device, buy a CBW SIM." One guy even gave me their internal tech support number at RIM!

I've been waiting for about 15-days using one of the big unlocking websites (where I submit my IMEI to a database -- and wait), but nothing back.

Is there a hands-on way to do this, with a device or something to unlock the phone? A place where I can ship it?

I only see BB unlocking by carrier (and no one lists CBW), or by IMEI (which I'm already waiting 15-days for).

Anyone have experience with something like this?

    Thanks....

    Hi Crave,

Realistically no, these are your only options. What did the web site you used tell you was the turn around time? I generally recommend gsmphonesource and although they advertise 24 hour turn around for Rogers, tmo, att phones, they do list 2 -3 weeks for "others".

    Kinda what I figured. :-(

It was new mobile freedom. They list 7-10 days. They told me to "hang in there."

I don't want to go to another unlocking provider if it resets the clock (ie - another 2-3-4 weeks).

But I most certainly would go to one if they promised 2-3 days.

Really, I don't mind waiting longer. I just don't want to hang on to a device that is "impossible" to be unlocked and is "forever" locked to CBW.

(sorry, I tried to PM you on this, but I don't have enough posts)

NICKY88XX -- Was your device a CBW device? If so, how long did it take?

Can I expect WiFi and MMS to not work at all on the 8120 once it's unlocked?

Or just no WiFi calling (which is expected, since AT&T doesn't offer that service) and shouldn't I be able to modify the MMS settings for the AT&T network?

    Thanks!

They shouldn't have listed 7 to 10 days. That is poor business practice from them. If you don't receive it within 4 weeks of your purchase, you should apply for a refund.

I am an eBay seller. If the auction description stated that this phone was Unlocked, then you have a reason to get your money back for a "not as described" claim. I would send the phone back to the seller, delivery confirmation only, not signature confirmation after filing a dispute, which he can refuse. Initial a dispute on Paypal (which I assume you used) and then escalate to a claim. When tracking states it was delivered, you will get your money back. Paypal has seller and buyer protection if you bought on eBay (which owns Paypal). You will get your money back for "not as described" claim. You should also file a for "not as described" claim on eBay.
