Is it because of privacy issues that we can't turn off the camera click sound? Or is there a way to do it on the Pearl?

I read this in another forum, tried it and works... its a few steps just to get the shutter sound off workaround to work... basically plug in the headset -> go to your media player -> play a song -> mute it -> then go to the camera -> snap a pic -> sound will be played through the headset

So you'd have to wear the headset? That sucks!

There was controversy when the camera/phones first came out. Some people were taking pics of women's locker rooms, etc.

Lawmakers were considering making it law to have the audible camera click or to otherwise regulate camera phones, such as banning carrying the phones in certain areas.

Manufacturers also were concerned that cell phone sales [and service] could suffer if people [such as lawyers] did not buy the phones with cameras.

Mandatory laws went nowhere because it was soon realized that if someone wants to take illegal pics, they can just use a silent digital camera.

But when there was a threat about banning or legislating camera/phones, some manufacturers said "no need" because they would voluntarily construct their phones with an audible camera click that could not be removed by users.

I believe back in the good 'ol days of film photography, one of the reasons people spent lots of money on a Leica was because it had an extremely quiet shutter. Funny how the world changes...

    BlackBerry Pearl Camera Shutter Noise

I have figured out how to get around the camera's shutter noise

Fastest time that I've taken a picture using this method has been 5 seconds.
    Follow these steps...

    1. Activate the camera
    2. Click on the menu button (button that's next to the place call button)
    3. Click on Call Voice Mail
    4. Press the back arrow button (press ok to continue call)
    5. Activate camera again "Now you have a silent camera"

Only negative thing using my method would be that you'd be using your minutes while you are taking the picture. Make sure to disconnect the call when you're done.

    Enjoy!

Also a quick little footnote...gotta plug my website here...

Good find but as long as a headset is available, I would still use the play an MP3, pause it to silence the sound. Then you can just take your time and take as many as you want.

5 seconds still uses a full minute on my plan.

This is the BEST trick I have tried. This is the only one that has worked for me as well.

How about playing an mp3 full of silence? Then maybe no headset is needed.
