    blackberry speaker- anyone drilling?

Ok, so I love my pearl and everything. I do have a particular pet peeve however. What's with the covered speaker? Has anyone bothered or thought of actually making a hole to expose the speaker the way nature intended?perhaps a mini drill? I think its a little extreme. I'm not thinking of doing it myself. Just wanted some thoughts

the only problem i think this would cause is the speaker being too loud and it making the volume and the quality very hazy.

I tested it with the back on and off and I can't hear a difference while on speaker phone.

    Re: blackberry speaker- anyone drilling?

I thought this was covered in another thread weeks ago.

I saved the BB logo on my PC, printed it out, made a template for the 8100.

    Then removed cover.

On back of cover tested the Dremel with drill bit to see if I needed pilot/starter holes. Did not since the plastic cover is soft and easily drilled with a high speed Dremel [even the battery operated one in the pic].

Then placed the logo and adjusted to what I thought would be straight.

    Taped it.

Then drilled. Holes were made very quick and easy. I moved the drill bit from side to side to make the holes bigger.

    See end result.

    Not bad.

Bonus Tip: If you do not know what a Dremel tool is or if you do NOT own a drill, and if you have to look for 20 minutes to find a screwdriver or hammer that is somewhere in your house, but you are not sure where, DO NOT DO THIS MOD! You will break, scratch, crack or otherwise ruin the pretty Pearl.

By the way, if you screw up your cover, I saw one on eBay that went for $11. Plus they are available from RIM and other sites now.

P.s That seller on eBay has horrible feedback, so I wouldn't buy from him. Just giving you a heads up on the part.

Drilled here. Went a little lower than SanFran as to not mess up thr logo. No complaints at all. Sound is much better IMO.

Nice job with the Dremel, sanfran. I think it sounds better with the cover off. I just switch from my Nextel, so I got used to having a nice loud ringer. Maybe I'll try the drill thingy. Hey, if I screw up, a replacement is as easy as ebay. Thanks for the imput guys.

Yeah, I debated where to drill too, decided to place the holes over the speaker center. Don't think it matters much in terms of sound, but on theory and in my mind seemed to make sense at the time.

Someone PM'd me and asked for the logo. No go as I did not keep it. Just get one somewhere on the Net.

Bonus Tip: I had to enlarge the graphic in my printing menu so it would scale to the size you see on the pic [taped to the phone]. You have to experiment on your particular printer to get the sizing right.
