Better Detailed Instructions on How to Downlaod OTA Without a Data Plan

I know this was posted before, but I have been getting a lot of questions so I created some more detailed instructions.

Long story short, I have found how to get OTA only applications to your phone without a Data Plan. It works great for me with no problems at all. I hope you like it.

THIS PROBABLY WON’T WORK WITH APPS YOU PURCHASE BECAUSE THEY USE YOUR PIN TO UNIQUELY IDENTIFY YOU AND USUALLY NEED DATA PLAN TO OPERATE CORRECTLY. DO NOT PURCHASE AN APPLICATION USING THE DEVICE SIMULATOR AND TRY TO SAVE IT AND USE IT ON YOUR PHONE. IT MORE THAN LIKELY WILL NOT WORK BECAUSE THE DEVICE SIMULATOR HAS A DIFFERENT PIN THAN YOUR PHONE.

This is for people who do not have a data plan and would like to download free OTA only applications that do not require a data plan or your pin to uniquely identify you to work properly.

Follow these directions to get the software you will need:

    1. Go to: https://www.blackberry.com/Downloads...897474079C1477

    2. Download and install the Device Simulator.

    3. Download and install the Email and MDS Simulator Package.

    4. Check to make sure you have Sun’s JDK 5.0, if not here is the link for download: https://sdlc2d.sun.com/ECom/EComActi...E394C9DA1334D8

EDIT: 5 You will also need to download and install the pearls operating system on your pc.

Use the Device Simulator to download applications OTA:

    1. Run the MDS Simulator from Start->All Programs->Research In Motion.

    2. Run the Device Simulator from the same location.

    3. Use the Device Simulators browser to download OTA applications.

Backup and install applications you have installed on the Device Simulator:

    1. Run the Device Simulator.

    2. On the menu bar in the simulator click on “Simulate”, then “USB Cable Connected.”

    3. Open Desktop Manager.

    4. Double click “Switch Device Wizard”.

    5. Click the button pertaining to “Switch Blackberry Devices.”

    6. Click “Next.”

    7. Choose your connection if necessary and click “Next.”

    8. Wait for it to load.

    9. Uncheck “User Data And Settings” which should also uncheck “Include Messages.”

    10. Make sure the only checkbox checked is “Third Party Applications.”

    11. Click “Next” and you should see it copying the applications from your phone.

    12. DO NOT CLICK ON NEXT OR CLOSE THE SWITCH DEVICE WIZARD.

    13. You need to go to your Temp Folder so open up My Computer.

    14. In the address bar type %temp% and hit enter.

    15. Now you need to search for your files. I am using Windows XP and I click on “Search”, then “All Files and Folders.”

    16. Search for all or part of the file name: *.alx

    17. If you do not find this file, then look below at “What to do If You can’t
    find the .alx file.”

    18. Right click on the alx file you found and select “Open Containing Folder.”

    19. Copy EVERYTHING in this folder to a folder on your Desktop or anywhere else.

    20. Click Cancel in the Switch Device Wizard.

    21. Close Desktop Manager.

    22. Disconnect the Simulated USB Connection in the Simulator.

    23. Close the Simulator.

    24. Connect your actual phone to the computer with the USB Cable.

    25. Open up Desktop Manager.

    26. Double Click “Application Loader.”

    27. Click Next.

    28. Click on “Add” and locate the folder you saved the application files to.

    29. Double click on the .alx file that shows up.

    30. Install.

What To Do If You Cannot Find The .alx File:

First of all I always find the .alx file, but a lot of people don’t.

    1. Search the temp folder like described above but this time for one of the applications you have installed on the Simulated Device by searching for all or part of the filename.

    2. Once you have found one of the files you can right click it and select “Open Containing Folder.”

    3. Copy EVERYTHING in this folder to a folder on your desktop or anywhere else.

    4. Rename the files to something simple and easy to remember and add the .cod extension to them.

    5. Now you have the cod files and you can install them using JavaLoader. But that is another set of instructions which I do not have enough time for right away. You can try searching, though.

I do not advise you to download and share OTA only files. This may be Illegal. However, If you agree to the terms of the download and download the file, you are allowed to use it.

Thanks. Hopefully somebody will find this useful. I know I've enjoyed it.

I can't wait to check out what this thing can do on the internet, though. I should be purchasing it within a month or so.

Looking forward to trying this (at work now), will it work to download/install the Today Plus theme?

That's how I got it. It's the best theme in the world BTW.

My Backup of third-party applications fails at 'Retrieving wirelessly delivered application modules' (it fails between the 'e&d' in delivered every time). Any ideas? The downloaded apps/themes seem to function on the simulator. I tried the Rogers and Cingular simulators with the same result.

Wierd. I've never had this problem until now. I was trying to see exactly where your error was occuring and it happened to me. I've had people tell me about it but didn't know what to tell them. I will let you know what I find.

I tried it on my laptop with the same result, the error occurs when it tries to retrieve the module "net_rim_bb_media_240_260_b.cod".

Re: Better Detailed Instructions on How to Downlaod OTA Without a Data Plan

ERROR MESSAGE: An error was encountered while attempting to retrieve wirelessly delivered applications from the device.

If you get this error you need to have the operating system for your Pearl installed on your computer. You can get it from your carriers website. I got mine from T-mobile's website. If you don't have it installed it tries to retreive all of the software on the phone including parts of the operating system and will eventually give you that error. After installing the device operating system on your computer it should work.

Also sometimes it doesn't copy or try to retreive any of the apps and it just skips to the next screen real fast telling you to connect your new phone. If this happens you will need to uninstall both the Device Manager and the Device Operating System from your computer and reinstall them.

    Hope this helps.

That module is something included in the operating system. Take a look at my previous post. If it works correctly you will only see it copy the applications you have downloaded to the simulator and it won't give you that error.
