Best OS for those of us that tether?

After lots of issues tethering and holding a connection on TMO with my 8100 and the .107 OS, including extensive trouble shooting sessions with TMO and RIM I decided to try just going back to .64 (which never gave me any problems) and see if it helped.

VIOLA...problem solved...connecting was no longer a problem and I can stay online for hours. Unfortunaly the new issue being that I miss many of the upgrades from newer OS's...

I have read other reports complaining about this problem after an upgrade to .107, but I would really like to get input from other stakers that tether on a regular basis and try to find the most current OS that provides for a reliable connection....

Oh yeah - Howdy to all my PS buddies...I know I have been MIA the past six weeks since I started a new job that does not allow me the time I had before to surf the stacks - miss you guys!

    ~via BB (wap.pinstack.com)~
Two words, before I hop on my soapbox: "Smart move! " Did you have any issues with tethering as a result of the DST bug? I was already on '64' and had a couple issues, or so, with sudden hang-ups. lol Except for that, 64 runs rings around 107.

    [SOAPBOX]
(That OS is a total embarrassment, and shouldn't yet be out of alpha, much less beta. I had more problems with 107 than I ever thought would be possible! The publisher I used to test for would die of embarrassment if they let something out in that state.)
    [/SOAPBOX]

Aside from tethering problems, how did you like that bob-stop hour glass!? I couldn't get anything done, for all the waiting!!

Missed the .73, actually... I was gone for a couple months, and limited to BB for all email/internet activity. Never saw it on TMO. I wouldn't mind trying it out, if I could find it. It has to be better than .107...

its in that thread yogich...it's AT&T's so you will need to delete the vendor file. It might be worth a try.

    Good luck

I think it was the one with the least troubles of all the updates that I can remember.

Update....I installed .73 this morning and it seems to have a very stable connection tethered....If anyone is using a newer version with good results please post and let us know!

Thanks for that URL... I don't know how I missed it. Another Senior Moment, I suppose.

I had downloaded Rogers .94, & the device wouldn't reload my data. Missing file on the device, it said. Think I'll give AT&T, to see if I have better luck.

On my BB, .64 isn't bad, but there are a couple probs ...one of which is a royal PITB.

    Hope your good wishes help.

    [Addendum]
I have just successfully installed Rogers .94, and the tethering is a little problematic... loaded with errors. I have been online doing a d/l for roughly 40 minutes, and already have 464 errors. Long lags, too, it is looking like. TMO's OS .64 at least had a low --I mean VERY_LOW-- error count. It was solid, as well. My prob with it was something else of probably more importance than tethering.

I'm going to take .73 for a spin, in the next couple days, or so, I think. Need to do some comparisons, myself --again, for different reasons than tethering but I will keep you posted. I've bookmarked this thread.

Re: Best OS for those of us that tether?

    [Addendum II]
    1. I noted at the moment I loaded .94 that the trackball was behaving a little funny. It would go down w/o any prob & didn't want to go up. Regardless of the fact I cleaned it very recently, I took it all apart, again, and discovered no lint. I blew it w/air, again, and there wasn't much change. Oh well.

    2. I have discovered that Rogers .94 --like TMO .107-- is problematic if one d/l large files in the BlackBerry browser. The throughput finally stops, and no amount of clicking a link will make it start, again. At the same time, the signal strength shows very good. Unlike .107, I was able to d/l roughly 7MB before this problem happened. It is highly predictable when this problem will happen.

I am convinced that it has to do w/the caching --like an overflow, or something-- since at one point, after d/l a 1997.1K vid using tinytube, the cache showed only 725.xK at the moment I clicked another link and went into the Options to take a look.

Perhaps these tradeoffs are acceptable for reasonably good tethering. Even though loaded w/errors, it didn't dump out, but the throughput was just not very high.

This never happened on OS v4.2.0.64

    3. When I pause a playing video in the on board player, the screen turns green, rather than keeping the colors of the images on the screen. OS v4.2.0.64 was the last version I used where this didn't happen.

Perhaps it is time to regress to .73.

    FWIW & inviting comments...

As an update I have had no issues and no drop connections with .73 after several consecutive hours connected!

Re: Best OS for those of us that tether?

I just put .73 on my 8100, and immediately got a twirling hour glass when I tried to open an email. It twirled 30 times ...and I pulled the battery. Next, I went to the browser, which had 887k in the cache from a vid I d/l, and tried d/l another. The hour glass twirled 23 times. I don't think this OS is going to survive the night on my unit. As noted earlier, there is a MAJOR CACHING PROBLEM on .73, .94, .107. It b0rks my ability to use the modem. Frankly, I am better off on 4.2.0.64 (if I don't use tinytube & don't use Audibleair to d/l), and .94 (if I do use tinytube --& do a batt pull about every 2nd video-- and want to use Audibleair to d/l).

    Yogich,

I have had no issues on the phone since I installed .73 and I have found it less troublesome than .64 (which had delays answering, etc).

You will also note Red's comment above that this is one of the more stable OS. You might want to try some of the suggestions in this post before you give up on the OS all together.

Re: Best OS for those of us that tether?

Well... all I know is that I hardly ever tether, so that part of it doesn't affect me, too much. I was interested in this thread because of that fact, and decided to to get involved and see what was good and was was not ...just in the event that I end up having to tether, like when I have to go out of town. (...Like when I was in another state for two months and was tethering with .64 ...and then installed .107 & started having issues.)

For me, I really_like .64. It works. Everything works, except dollar5's mediaPlayer video. The OS versions that follow have tweaks, here and there, but there is one major bug which sabotages me each and every time I go on the net.

    Thanks for the URL.
