Address book and sim card help please

OK, so the contacts on my sim card are a mess. For example they are like:-
    Dad
    Dad/1
    Dad/2
    Dad/45

but the contacts on my Blackberry are perfect for example

    Dad -
    Mobile
    Home
    Work
    Fax

How do I organise the sim card enteries?

Also when i receive a text the Blackberry only knows who the text is from by looking at the sim card entries, how can i change this so the blackberry looks at the blackberry contacts/address book.

    Does that make sense?

You could try clearing all the contacts off your SIM and just keeping them on the BB. For some reason SMS may give priority to the SIM entry, especially if it's storing the messages on the SIM. Check Options -> SMS -> Leave Messages On SIM.
And if you do clear your SIM of the contacts, make sure you do a backup of your user data, just in case.

If i delete all of dad from the SIM:-

    dad
    dad/1
    dad/2

then when I get a text from dad, even though he is in my Blackberry address book, the blackberry doesnt know the number, and diplays it as a number and not a name.

    ~via BB (wap.pinstack.com)~

Clear your sim. Go back to the set up wizard and copy them back to the sim

Is it in the Blackberry Contacts in a different format than it is on the SIM card? No area code, for instance? I'm really baffled as to why it wouldn't recognize it from the Blackberry address book.
Is it a brand new incoming message that it doesn't recognize after you delete the SIM entry, or an older message that just displays the number now?
Try this: Delete the SIM entry. Make sure the Address Book is correct. Do a soft reset. Receive a new incoming SMS.
That may solve it. If not, I'm at a loss.

OK, so I have a EMPTY sms inbox. I have Dad Mobile in the Blackberry Address book only (not on the SIM)

When Dad CALLS - it says Dad (not the number), but when I get a TEXT it says his number not name.

If I then go to SIM card address book and add Dad there, then the text message in the inbox comes up with his name NOT number.

So if I want to add a contact I have to add it TWICE!! one for the blackberry (for calls) and one for the SIM (for sms) *** this is bulls**t

You can check your OS by going to Options, then About.

Yup, that's it. I really couldn't tell you if it was the OS or not, but there are newer updates available. And it's always good to have the latest OS when trying to troubleshoot. It is a Pearl, correct?
Check here for the latest OS.

You should be able to use the AT&T OS, unless there's a specific OS update from the O2 website...
    http://blackberry.o2.co.uk/BlackBerr...d_software.asp
Looks like 4.2.1.93 is the newest from O2, you may feel more comfortable using that one instead of a different carrier's OS.

    ok.... update..

If I add =44 to the beginning of the mobile number the blackberry, then the text message will be named and not numbered, even if its NOT on the SIM.

So I have to edit all my Blackberry contacts with +44 in the begining
