    A few general Pearl questions.

    Good afternoon,

I used to work for T-Mobile and bought my first Pearl back in November or. I absolutely loved the phone and the options it had, but I even liked my dealer line better. Anyways, I sold it in January or so and just bought another one two days ago.

    My first question:

I had the answer delay with my first pearl and it was happening at first with this Pearl, but I cannot remember for the sake of my life how to update the software other than just the desktop manager. I think before I had to upload a certain file to the phone to update last time which took roughly 20 minutes. Any ideas?

Second, is there any way to keep the pearl scroller illuminated at all times? I installed ColorPearl and have it set to blue and would like to keep it on all the time. I love the dark blue when the screen is dim, but the light blue I'm not too pleased by. That's no biggy though.. maybe I'll try to edit something to keep the auto-bright / dimmer off.

Lastly, as of right now I have T-Mobile but I'm going to start to use my Cingular dealer line and I like the T-Mobile version of the Pearl better than the Cingular. When I unlock the phone, will the internet still work with the T-Mobile version or is there some kind of reload or software I have to update?

I apologize for the "newbie" questions.. but just trying to get back into the Pearl groove!

    Thanks in advance!

    Adam

Hi Adam and Welcome back to the family!
    1. I beleive this is an operating system issue. You can experiment with newer OS's that have reportedly corrected this.
    2. I dont beleive so with normal configuration and color pearl (if you can someone else will post the solution soon). There is another aftermarket program availble on Handango for about $5 that I beleive does allow you to set it allways on (can you say battery life?).
    3. Once unlocked you can use your Cingy SIM card and all features that are on your account should work fine.

Hope this helps. Post back any questions.

    Welcome to the Stacks!

    1. Update to a newer OS using DM. There is a link in my sig for that.
    2. No there isn't, it responds directly according to your back lighting, and the White LED on the pearl is linked to your keypad lighting. (hopefully the white one gets unassociated in a future OS so the colors look better)
    3. You device will work how you have it set up now with a few expections.
    a. You will need to unlock it of course
    b. You will need to re-register the device and send the Cingy service books
    c. I swear there is one more thing, but I can't recall at the moment. *edit* Change your APN settings if you've set them specific to Tmo.

Let us know if you have any other questions, 'nooby' or not!

Thanks for the quick replies! Now that I think about the scroller being on constantly, that would make the battery life much worse than it is. I'm on the phone a lot so maybe that wouldn't be the best idea.

Now if I colored the LED bulb for the keypad with a blue sharpie like some people do to color their scroller, that should keep the blue darker all the time then, right?

That's cool with the Cingular thing. I think it was 2 years or so ago with a RAZR I had and I couldn't use the T-Zones or anything since it had T-Mobiles software on the phone. As long as I can use the internet with Cingular on the T-Mobile phone, I'll be happy.

    Thank you again.

Yes, it would, the sharpie trick is used a lot, but usually black to just blot it out. Blue would be cool if you always wanted it blue, otherwise you might run into some funky color combos.

You might need to delete the module for Tmo specific software that stays on after your switch.

I did the update. It took a little longer than last time but I'm sure it will be worth it.

Since the update, when I pull up the Menu option.. it changed the way all of the icons are set up. It used to be a scroll list and now it's all the icons on one page. How can I change this?

Second, I bought this phone from a girl who had it for a week and her e-mail address is still on here somewhere. Where exactly do I have to go to remove her e-mail address from the phone?

The Tmo themes changed a bit in the newer OS's. The iconic menu isn't my favorite but you get used to it. Some 3rd party themes will still give you this list menu.

To make sure that all of her data is gone, you really should Wipe the device, go Settings>Security Options>General Settings>Menu>Wipe Handheld. This takes it back to factory defaults. I think it will even roll back your OS, but I'm not entirely sure exactly, I'd have to look it up first.

You are looking at a different "theme"
Options>Theme will give you other choices.

Before you add your info wipe the device to clean up the last users data...

I figured I'd have to do a reset of the phone to get rid of her stuff; no big deal though.

Does anyone happen to have a 3rd party theme that makes the application list look like the one before the OS update?

Edit: I found a write up on how to change it back to the older style. The only problem was finding the theme that anothe member had uploaded but I found it on a secondary host.

Ahh, glad to be back to normal.

    Question about Desktop Manager:

When I go to load new applications, should I uncheck everything that is already installed? When I leave it all checked, it resets my theme and what not.

I'm trying to load a few new applications.. but I don't want to lose the theme I have on there. What's the best way to go about this so I can just add new software without resetting everything?
