8100 Pearl Not Recognized on Dell Desktop

So my custom PC at home sees the Pearl no problem, but my Dell at work does not.

Downloaded 4.2 software, and its not recognized via USB.

    Any ideas?

    Thanks.

Did you go into DeskTop manager and ask it to recognize/detect the connection to your PC?

Also, try different USB ports on the computer.

Make sure the cable is firmly connected into both the 8100 and the PC.

Try a different cable if you are using a different one than that which came with the 8100. Some USB cables go bad for lack of a better term.

Try to reboot the computer. Then open Desktop Manager, then connect the 8100. Sometimes rebooting is necessary to get things set up in the XP registry.

Also, if it's a cable or port problem, try connecting the 8100 WITHOUT opening Desktop Manager. Windows should open the 8100 and recognize the 8100 as a USB drive and folder.

If it does not, then you either have a cable/port issue or the 8100 is not set up properly.

I cannot recall and definately not sure, but I think there is a pop-up menu and setting on the 8100 that asks if you want to set up "mass storage" on the 8100. I cannot recall if that was because I had installed a MicroSD chip or if it was a selection made when first connecting the 8100 to a PC.

So check to see if the 8100 has some "mass storage" or USB switch to where you are "turning on" USB mode for the 8100 and the PC to operate.

By the way, I have Dell computers too, if that matters. On the four desktops I have, about half the USB ports on the units do NOT work. I dunno, but seems on these year 2003 units Dell put in some cheapo USB ports.

Lucky that as configured they each have 6 USB ports [2 in front, 4 in back] or I'd be pissed. As it is, I have to use external USB hubs on some of the units to compensate for some ports not working.

    Thanks SF.

Its wierd, it says not enough USB power on the Pearl earlier, tried many different ports, will try different cable.

    Rebooted, no luck.

Hmmm, used software download from BB.com instead of CD.

Argh, the only bummer so far ... but I'm sure its something dumb.

I know MAC guys get the "Not enough power to charge" pop up screen when they dont have pocket mac installed. Seems to me like the DM is either not the right one or didnt install properly? Check the version of your DM. simply open the DM click on HELP and the version number will be the first screen to show up.

Well since it works at home, it can't be the Pearl, it has to be the work PC. You are not using any USB extension cords from the port, are you? I ask this because sometimes USB cords are the problem.

Some USB cords are not of good quality and cannot transmit power through them. This is because in wanting to cut manufacturing costs, some make cheap connectors or fewer wires when making the cable.

Also, there are some differences in USB 1.0 and 2.0 cables. 2.0 cables can handle more "transactions" than 1.0 cables.

Lastly, some USB cables just go bad.

Try using a beefy USB 2.0 cable like that RIM included with the Pearl.

I would also check the status of your USB ports. Go to <control panel> <system> <hardware> <device manager> and see if there are any exclamation points or question marks. An exclamation point means the port is not operating correctly. A question mark may mean the port is operating but a driver may not be installed.

Yeah, i'm bringing a BB cable in manana, will update you.

In the meantime me and my Pearl are gonna take the N train home now. She looks so good tonight, I'm thinking I may take her out for dinner for lasagna in Little Italy ... mmmm, I love thee, my Pearl.

Re: 8100 Pearl Not Recognized on Dell Desktop

I've had the same issues on my Dell with other devices and Dell tech support said it was because the ports on the computer were not USB v.2.0 I am able to connect my pearl though...to those same ports. I'll bet it is the cable or the ports themselves...as was mentioned in earlier replies.

Ok, DO NOT USE THE DOWNLOAD, use your CD that came with it.

    Good advice!

Is that what you did and is it working now?

My understanding is that the Download Manager online does not have the Pearl USB comm program, that which is on the CD. The Online version has to be "generic" to work on other BB devices.

Man, all that work in my post for nothing.
