Question 8100 is dead but red light flashes????

    Hi....

Last week after finishing a call I plugged my 8100 back into the charger and when I picked it up an hour or so later the handset was completely dead. I tried a soft reboot and have taken the battery out etc to no avail.

It was running on my works enterprise network but when I spoke to IT dept their helpful answer was "it looks dead". This is a personal blackberry (about one month old from new) as cheapo company will only provide older handsets so they are not interested in helping.

When I plug in the charger or PC USB cable the red light flashes repeatedly so something is live. Have tried battery in a friends 8100 and that works fine. SIM card works fine as well. Have also tried a new battery and that doesn't work either.

I have spent a couple of days looking at older threads and have been trying to re-load the software as outlined in the thread "How To: ReInstall OS When Computer Won't Recognize The Device Is Connected".

    However.....
    i) I have uninstalled and re-installed the blackberry desktop manager to my PC as suggested
ii) I have downloaded the handheld software for the 8100 to my PC as suggested
iii) When I take the battery out and connect to my PC it just can't detect the 8100 in the communications settings (even when I hit "detect"). This seems to be the major stumbling block as I cannot even get started on the instructions.

I haven't tried the "wipe handheld" instruction on the basis I can't get the PC to recognise it is attaced.

Has anyone else had a new 8100 die on them like this for no reason and can you suggest any way I can get the communication to work so I can try and reinstall the os etc.

Many thanks in advance for any help.....

Have you tried this: How to Reinstall OS when the Device is not Recognized?

Re: 8100 is dead but red light flashes????

Yes....I had a good search through the forums before posting this as I can see it seems to be a pretty common issue.

My main problem is that I haven't ever tried to connect the BB to my home PC before as I only use it for work email. I can't see that I am doing anything stupid but I can't get desktop manager to recognise the BB is attached so I can't start the application loader to reinstall the 8100 software as suggested.

Do I have to go straight to the "wipe handheld" instruction and does this work even if you can't get the PC to recognise the BB is attached?

    Thanks

When you connect your BB, the PC isn't going through a "New Hardware Found" pop box by the clock? What PC Operating System are you running and have you done a restart of the PC with the BB connected to the PC?

Re: 8100 is dead but red light flashes????

Thanks for coming back on this....

I have tried restarting the PC with the BB connected and the battery both in and out but it is not detecting new hardware found. I am trying this on my work laptop, however (although while not logged onto the network to avoid issues with that) and this does not have the BB desktop manager installed. I will try again on my home PC but can't see why my laptop shouldn't detect the hardware?

In terms of software OS it is Windows XP on my home PC.

The symptoms seem the same that many others have faced (died suddenly - red light flashes when battery is inserted) so I am reluctant to admit defeat straight away (especially as it is only a month old) but until I can get the PC to comminicate with the BB I can't try any other solutions offered.

    Thanks

My Pearl is a month old as well. It was on the charger, I came to unplug it, and it was flashing red and would not turn on. I've tried everything mentioned on this page. My computer won't recognize it, so anything through the desktop BB software is not helping. Sprint told me the phone was just broke and to come in for an exchange. I somehow don't think that is it. I can't go in for an exchange due to the sprint/nextel conversion of their billing. What a great time for my phone to be broken!

Re: 8100 is dead but red light flashes????

Same problem. I have a different thread opened on this. I am on my second phone and when talking to Rogers they said that the warranty is over and its basically my problem.....so come in and buy a new phone.
I have not been impressed with the BB at all from the beginning. My previous phone was a Treo and it worked a hell of a lot better. I switched because I thought I was getting the best thing out there. But the BB has way to many software issues for my liking...very inconsistent. Even if this 14 step fix solves the problem???? I will just happen again and u will have to do this all over again. I'm not a big fan!!

Well I'm off to Rogers to buy a new phone.....Even after all this complaining, for some reason there's something about it that I still like. Not sure what that is but there's something there. Maybe I should just give up on all the BS and just by a phone that u can phone people with. Nothing more nothing less!!!

Well it sucks that you have had issues with the BB. I have had three BB's and have never had one issue with any of them. As with all electronics, there are a few bad ones out there. I assure you that the BB OS is much faster and stable than any Palm or Windows Mobile OS. I will never switch back to a WM OS unless RIM stops making devices but I seriously doubt that will happen in my lifetime.

I hope you get your issues resolved but don't give up on the BB. You can see there are thousands and thousands of "Stackers" who absolutely love their BB so try a different model and then change if you are not happy.

    Tiara,

Did you try the steps in the link that Kalebs Dad posted in post#2 (how to reinstall an OS when your desktop manager will not recognize your device)?

Suggest you be patient and try more than once...might try launching the application loader even if the desktop manager says not connected...

Have you tried to remove the SIM? Are you GSM? I work at Tmobile and haveseen 3 of these problems resolved with a new SIM. Device will boot up with no SIM, so try and see if that makes a difference...???

Even if desktop manager doesn't recognize the device, go through the steps. That's what i did on a friend's and it worked. Also be sure service books and OS are up to date before wiping and reinstalling.

Question Re: 8100 is dead but red light flashes????

I have tried all of the steps in the posts above but the desktop manager will still not recognise that the handset is attached.

I have tried connecting with the battery in and out, the SIM card in and out and even with a new SIM in from another T-Mobile blackberry.

I have also tried just ignoring the fact that the desk top manager says the handset is not connected and opening the application loader wizard anyway. The first page is called "Communication Port Selection" and the drop down box is empty and the "detect communication port" box is grayed out so I cannot check it.

This means I just cannot proceed with any of the instructions in the thread "how to reinstall your os...."

If I go back into the desktop manager and open the "options" then "connection settings" tabs and then click the "detect" button the following error message opens "please ensure the device is properly connected" followed by "device not found".

    It is connected!

Alternatively, if I click the "connection" drop down box I can manually select a USB connection but then when I go through the application loader the "connection port selection" drop down box is still empty.

If anyone has anything else I can try I would really appreciate it as I can't believe the device is completely dead.

    Thanks

What Desktop Manager are you running? I have 4.3 and I just launched app loader with no device commected and it gave me com ports in the drop down box and the detect option AND the Next Button. When I clicked next it proceeded to "connecting to device" again, this is with NO device plugged in...
