    Question 7100i vs 8130 pearl

Hello everyone, new to BB and the website, so far great info. Here is my question. My contract with verzion is up next month, so moving to Sprint / Next el. The wifes phone is going to be 8830 WE. that is a no brainer for her work needs. I'm stuck between the 7100i and the 8130. My company uses direct connect, but it is not mandatory, just a nice option. I currently have a Treo 650, which is used mostly for phone, web, sms, and the calender, and task features. I also Internet for Lotus notes. I have been known to be a bit rough on my phones also.
I was thinking the 7100i for the direct connect, and the 8130 for the bigger screen, GPS (separate and built in like the 8830 correct?), and the modem capabilities. The camera would be nice but, if I lost it no big deal.
I know I forgetting some, most likely major, differences. I am looking for pros and cons between the two and any durability considerations.
Sorry for the long post and thanks in advance.

    8130 hands down, no contest.
Trackball for navigation, built in GPS. Just a cooler looking device. Has video recording, if you can part with the direct connect that is.

They are both good units, and of course, have their pros and cons.

The one area that I would highly suggest you focus on and evaluate before making a decision is the keyboard. I have had both models you are considering and found that (for me) the keyboard on the Pearl was the deal breaker, even though I bought the phone, tried for a couple of months to adapt to it, in the end it was the straw that broke the camels back. The Pearl's keyboard is unlike any other, it's built on a one piece rubber membrane. When you push a key it tends to rock in every direction. If you are not doing very much email or other things that cause you to use the keyboard, you will be fine.

That said, I found the 7100 keyboard far superior, very fast and easy to use. Why? Simply because it's made in conventional fashion with separate keys that have travel and are large enough to easily distinguish between.

This report is based on ownership (of both) and usage of several months, not just a first impression in the store, and therein, lies the difference. There is nothing like taking it home and using it in your normal environment.

    Hope this helps.

    Cheers!
