    6Gb Micro SDHC Card Problem

    Hi,

I have a Sandisk 6gb Micro SDHC Card.
My 8100 is running 4.2.1.107 , and i have 4.2 PSR Desktop thing.

    First the Good News.

    1) When i put the new 6Gb card into my 8100 i thought i was well setup. Under advnaced>Media Card , it immediately showed 5.56Gb as being available. WHen i take the card out and put it into my PC, my PC shows 5.56 Gb availabel of the 6gb and also shows all the right directories have been created.

    So far so good..

    BUT..

    The Bad News.

1/ Having set Mass storage mode =ON . When i run Desktop Manager and launch Media Manager, the Media Card is not shown in the Media Manager. humpf.!
2/ SO taking the card out you can add files upto about 1.6Gb (18blahblah bytes) on your PC and my 8100 still saw them.
3/ Above the 1.6Gb bytes , when i put the card back into my PC i get an error message along the lines of "media format error, please use a disk checkign software" (or something liek that).
4/ I can take it out and my PC can work with it fine..
5/ IF I FORMAT the Micro SDHC card in my 8100 it formats at 2Gb.!!

SO it seems to me that in my particular case the hardware/software can only read data upto 2Gb, after that its hosed.

Wondered if any of you more knowledgeable people out there had any constructive thoughts!!

Re: 6Gb Micro SDHC Card Problem

I know that!! But, bearing in mind anything over 4gb is MicoSDHC surely its not that challenging for developers to write the drivers to cope with higher spec cards...it seems silly to have to write something for a 4gb, 5gb,6,gb,7,gb,8,gb,,,etc,,,16gb,,,,, each time one is produced.

Plus we only know t handles 4gb because we ,the punters, have gambled on purchasing 4gb cards and installing them...

I havent seen ANY release notes that explicitely state the size of MicroSDHC cards suppported.. which i find incredulous...

I was hoping that as it handle 4Gb so well that the software drivers coudl cope with 6Gb... which they sort of do.. its just other bits of code that maybe need to be changed..

http://www.mobymemory.com/micro-SD.asp...they state it's functional here...however it is a retailer...but then they could be sued for false advertisement...here's a couple things i would try...first wipe your PC of any old/new BB OSes and DMs...having them can cause conflict when setting up your device...once they are gone re-install and reset your BB...remember to BACK-UP your BBs data before updating the OS...see if this helps while i continue to research...post back plz

So far according to Blackberry's Technical Solution Center:

    Doc ID : KB05461
    Last Modified : 2007-10-02
    Document Type : What Is

    Environment

    • BlackBerry® 8800 smartphone
    • BlackBerry® Curve™ 8300 smartphone
    • BlackBerry® Pearl™ 8100 smartphone
    • MicroSD media card

    Details

A microSD media card is a small, removable flash memory data storage device. When inserted into a BlackBerry smartphone, it can extend the memory available for storing media files such as videos, ring tones, pictures, or songs. The media card is sold separately from the BlackBerry smartphone.
Currently, BlackBerry smartphones support media cards with up to 8GB of memory. MicroSD media cards with 4GB and 8GB of memory require BlackBerry smartphones running BlackBerry® Device Software 4.3 or later.

~via BB (wap.pinstack.com)~You do not need to format the micro-SD card In your BB device! I have an Unformatted card in mine and it works perfect. Granted its only 2 gigs. It works fine though. So a little word of advice: Don't format the card or you won't be able to use it on anything else.

Re: 6Gb Micro SDHC Card Problem

That's why I don't want to buy another card. I have a 2 gig. Don't want to buy it and then unable to use it.
Anyways, 4.3 its for new devices only right. Just like you can't install 4.2.2 on a pearl.
I guess if we want that we would have to buy the latest device as well.

Re: 6Gb Micro SDHC Card Problem

Max in-spec for 4.2 is 2GB... although some 4GB out-of-spec cards are known to work.
SDHC cards require 4.3+ OS update. I've posted further info in another thread:
