    If you don't have anything on the card right now, try re-formatting it.

    Perhaps what is advertised isn't always what it is. For instance, you buy a 200GB hard drive, only it's not 200GB it's 198.8GB and such. Know what I mean? You buy a 2.0GHz processor, only it's only 1.98GHz. Maybe it's the same with your MicroSD card. Maybe it isn't 512MB...

    Did you format the Media Card from your BB first? Or did you try to format it in a PC first?

    Hopefully your card wasn't a return, There was a story about a teen girl who bought a returned Ipod and found it loaded with porn.

    check whats on the memory card, are there any files that you didnt download. If there are try deleting them, if you think its a previously used card take it back to the place of purchase and explain it to them.

    You don't know why?

    1. In computing:
    1KB=1024B
    1MB = 1024KB

    However, memory manufacturers to make it easier for themselves adopted a different system:
    1KB=1000B
    1MB=1000KB

    Now, a 512MB card in computing should be 512 x 1024 = 524 288 KB
    Using the memory manufacturers system we get 512 x 1000 = 512 000KB
    Now 512 000 KB : 1024 = 500 MB.

    2. Every card, HDD or other memory storage device needs some space for "the system". It means, the card uses abou 12MB for its own purposes.

    That is why a 512MB card will be shown as 488MB (give or take a few MB depending on the card type and manufacturer) in a computer or mobile.

    What brand card is this? Does the card have an reserved encrypted side to it by chance?

    If i remember correct after formatting a 512mb card it should have 488mb free (or something close).

    Also try to open the card in a card reader on a pc and select tools/folder options/view/ then select show hidden files and folders. See what else pops up?

    Something is taking up that space.

    edit* Szadzik is correct but the numbers still dont add up correct even after all that.

    I would reformat the card or check it from a PC with Windows Explorer like someone else mentioned to see exactly whats on it.

    The Pearl only shows the file types it supports but there could be a bunch of files that it doesnt support so it doesnt show them. I just did this yesterday. From the PC I could see everything but from the Pearl a bunch were not showing.

    That's pretty messed up of the previous owner and the store for not formatting prior to return/sale. I'd sue if I was the parent of that girl.
