You don't need a data plan to use wifi.

What exactly are you trying to do via WiFi?

    The Hotspot Browser will work.

Facebook, BlackBerry Messenger, push email, other IM (MSN, AIM, Yahoo) will not work on WiFi only without a BlackBerry data plan, since you will not have the service books for any of those native apps from RIM that use RIM's NOC.

The apps from RIM (email, Facebook app, Twitter app, AIM/MSN/Yahoo Messenger app) go through RIM's Network Operating Center. Only persons who have a BIS (BlackBerry Internet Service) plan (that is the BlackBerry data plan) have the proper service books that enable this access.

Ok guys listen here..iv got another issue with wifi I need to clear up. I'm trying to connect to the wifi @ work and this notification comes up: "This wireless router supports Wi-Fi Protected Setup. To connect use a pin (which you bb will generate) click next"..then the pin appears and a countdown timer to enter the pin into the router..that's where I'm lost...how do I enter the pin into the router??

That's something your administrator at work would have to do. I've never heard of this before. You can ask whoever administers the wireless router how to connect your device.
