why the 8300 and the 8800

I would assume that the larger numbers typically mean a better phone. Kind of like the bmw's and mercedes benz models.

I would think it would be titled the 8830 instead of the 8300.

I do not know, just seems awkward to me.

I originally thought the same thing. But I was thinking about it from a marketing standpoint with respect to target audience. I think any BB with a camera is going to have a different target audience than one without, corporate vs. casual user. Also, look at the key pad. It appears to be different from the 8800, specifically there are spaces between the keys.

I could see where it would have an 8300 model number since, having a camera, I think they may be trying to capture the non-corporate user that doesn't like Suretype. I think the 88xx may be reserved for non-camera models aimed at the corporate user.

    Sure is fun to speculate.

Actually there's a reason for the numeric value of a bb. It was a thread here that discussed it before. They all describe an attribute to a bb

Why? The 8700 doesn't have a camera. The 8100 does... Which is yet another example of why that's a faulty assumption. In general it's true that a higher model numbered device will have more features but I wouldn't consider the 7270 or the 7280 to be better than the 7230 either.

The model numbers are just there to differentiate the models -- not to establish any sort of hierarchy. For example: 71XX and 81XX devices are SureType devices. The 1 in the model number doesn't mean that they're any less capable than their qwerty counterparts.

Who shops for smartphones without researching basic specs first anyway?

It's a handy rule-of-thumb type thing but I don't think RIM officially follows this scheme. There are just too many exceptions even with GSM devices. For example, the 8700 doesn't fit in as its screen is 320x240.

When you add in the CDMA and iDen devices you can toss all that out the door... Not to mention the 7270.

I suspect that really RIM has slightly altered its numbering scheme several times as they've added features over the years. The 8300 -- if it really will be called that -- could be a reflection of a change in the scheme to designate X3XX devices as camera-equipped, full qwerty models. It's all still speculation at this point, though.

I was looking at the other thread and it needs a little updating with the following models:

    870x
    7105
8800, and any other models that may come out soon.

I wonder if RIM works as hard at figuring out the numbers or if they just say "what do we have available in an 8xxx?" for the new BB.

Hey, RIM why not have a model that has the design of the 8700, with expandable memory card either mini or micro SD, 3G, WiFi one or the other or both. Full Qwerty board. I can do without a camera. Please don't sacrifice quality for quanity.
    My 1/2 cent.

~via BB (wap.pinstack.com)~i just bought the 8703e and love it. Looked at the 8800 but the keys were toooOoo close together. The 8300 looks to be closer to the 8700 keyboard.

Well I would have to say that the site posted in the earlier thread helps a lot on the confusion of model #'s.

    Thanks again for the link,
