At the risk of sounding dumb....I still don't know how to use the wifi connection to make calls.

I'm on Vodafone UK, and to test, I turned off the radio and connected to my home wireless network, I got onto the internet just fine.

When I then tried to make a call, it came up with:

'radio is off - restore connections'

It's still trying to use the GPRS network (Vodafone) to make the call. I need to know how you guys can make calls over the wireless network and not your phone carrier.

Any advise will be moer than welcome.

    Thanks, all.

There's really no need to turn your radio off... if you are in a wi-fi area and can connect or your phone has switched to UMA, the work has already been done automatically. Just make the call and you're calling on wi-fi.

    Gman,
I think this might be a problem of Vodafone UK not supporting UMA.
Did you ring them up to check?

I am on O2 Ireland and talking to one of their customer service reps today,
she didn't even know what UMA was! Had to transfer me to tech
support but they couldn't give me a clear answer either...

I guess here on the isles we're going to have to wait for something
like UMA forever - why would carriers allow us to make free calls
when they can make a fortune on call time with us phone junkies!

Anyways, I still use my wifi for fast browsing and writing emails
in bed (radio signal is very poor where I live).

Goldenhours, thanks for that, I think your explanation clears it for me. I'm pretty sure over here, UMA isn't quite there yet. And I know what you re the so pros we call for advise are clueless most of the time. Thanks.

I only use my wifi for the web and my messengers, but only when I'm at home I would be connected to wifi all day. I would use it outside my house if only I can find a connection. Usually my messenger and web is great when I'm not home, I just can't get it moving in my area so I need the wifi when I'm home.

Now a days the new name for "cell phone" is "Blackberry"!
