last night I called Rogers BB support. Asked them if they had any timelines for a v5 release. The guy on the line said that it might never happen.

That blows! Well, at least you can always try other carriers' OS and see how well it runs on your device. You'll love 5.0; it's amazing. Fortunately, my 9700 came with it outta the box. Threaded sms/new stuff and what not makes this OS a must have. Good luck!

during the same conversation he also told me not to do the before mentioned upgrade. "don't jail break your bb"

me: "uh, Jail breaking is a iPhone term"
him: "No, applies to BB's as well. don't load other carrier's OS's on your BB. it will void your warranty"

    these guys truly kill me.

Then you shoulda told that fool...you're a noob and should look for another job because you suck. Ever heard of loading an OS and reverting? You can load any carrier's OS onto your bb of course for the device you're using now and can always revert to the original one. What a noob. I hate paranoid freaks trying to scare people into buying a new phone because that one has a new OS. Don't go for that, You can do this. Jailbreak, my foot! You should've told him I'll probably go to jail for breaking your neck.

T-Mobile tried that crap with me. It started with a broken USB port on a 7105t. T-Mobile voided my warranty on that one because they claimed it was water damaged (by sweating in the box I sent it back to them in). I raised sand about the out of warranty charge and sent an additional 7105t, 2 8100's and 1 8120 back. I nearly got in a fight back in August with an in-store CSR over this one. He told me I had to load the OS back onto the phone with the memory and SIM cards, along with the battery, out of the phone. I've replaced 12 BB's with upgraded OS's without removing anything before this incident in the store. My mom and I just looked at each other cause we knew he was wrong, proven by my track record. I go through BB's like water LOL. All went back with upgraded OS's and I was never charged again.

What do you do to them? :-)

OS upgrades are phone dependent NOT carrier dependent

Judging by the comments the rep told you, he really shouldn't work in tech support, ever. You can' JB a BB. It isn't locked in the same way the iPhone is. Second, you will not void the warranty with RIM by loading another carrier's OS on your device. RIM could care less who the carrier is, so long as it's the OS for your device model. Lastly, while I can't even begin to predict a timeline for the release of 5.0 on Roger's, it'll come eventually. RIM has already said they plan to release it on the 8900 model.

Wireless radio crapped (2), trackball locked up, trackwheel locked up, USB port broke, OS reboots (2), 1 sent back because it was lost en route to my house. I still have 4 (7730, 7100t, 8100, 8120).
