Question UGH. Work Won't Link to Email

I am a remote employee and really liked the idea of getting a BB so I can check my emails out on the road. I called IT this morning and was informed that they do not support non company issued BB. The guy knows me and was very nice and apologetic. He did tell me I can use the browser for webmail which I have figured out how to do but entering in my information is going to be a huge pain.

Any tips, tricks or suggestions? I seem to recall reading somewhere here that there is a program I can download to save passwords.

The one good thing I guess is I will save $20 a month as I will not have to upgrade my plan for another $20 but I expense my cell phone monthly anyway and had the money in my monthly budget to cover this.

I apologize if this is in the wrong place.

Why not just get a company issued BlackBerry?

Or pay the $ to get the BES plan and just connect it to the BES?

You could always have them set a forward rule to user@carrier.blackberry.net, however, my guess is if they don't support "non company" bb's, they aren't going to allow that either.

Is your company on Microsoft Exchange? I was able to access my email via BIS without issue on an excnage server? Have you tried to set up your BB to retrieve your company email account? What happenes when you do?

They won't give me a company issued BB. I get a monthly $ amount towards my telecommunications and can get what I want -- if it goes over I pay for it. Only managers get company issued BB.

Forgive my stupidity. I don't know what BES or BIS is. They won't set up a rule for me . . . They said they won't set up any kind of rules and just said go online through Microsoft Outlook Webmail.

I feel like I am in a black hole and have no idea what I am doing.

I have never felt so dumb.

BES is blackberry enterprise server, BIS is blackberry internet service, which is what you want. You can contact AT&T tech support and they can give you the URL to the site, you create an account and put your info for your berry in there. Then you click import account, put your email address and password in and it will auto configure and set up the account. The only negative is, you'll probably get pushes every 15 minutes, not immediate as you would on the corporate site.

Re: UGH. Work Won't Link to Email

My guess is your IT department isn't dumb apparently and setting up an account on BIS won't do anything.

The only other option you have is to set up the account in Outlook on a computer somewhere (assuming they will let you do that), and actually set a rule in outlook to forward incomming emails to a name@carrier.blackberry.net account, although A: this doesn't always work. B: When it does work, it works, but sometimes doesn't. C: That outlook has to ALWAYS be running. You close your outlook, you don't have a forwarding rule.

Just depends on how bad you want your corporate email on your device. It may be worth the extra $ to do so. How large is your company? Whats the manager turn over rate? My guess is, they probably have atleast 1 open account on the BES>

If your company is using an Exchange server, you should be able to set up a rule as was previously suggested to forward to another account. I have mine forwarded home which in turn autoforwards to my gmail and yahoo accounts (this way I have records of all the needed emails). Due to the way the gmail and yahoo accounts are set up, most of the time the e-mails arrive at my BB device before my exchange server picks them up at work and I see them on my workstation. The beauty is that since the exchange server is always running, I have no need to have the workstation even on as the rule remains with the account on the server and not on the workstation, so it works when logged out or the computer not even being on.

Re: UGH. Work Won't Link to Email

Thats usually what we would do for a client who is too cheap to invest in a BES. Hah...But they won't set any forwarding rules for him on the BES.

If they would allow it, he could be up and running within a matter of minutes by setting up a BIS email, changing the "reply to" email as his work email, and setting a forward rule on the BES.

What kind of company is it just out of curiosity?

Re: UGH. Work Won't Link to Email

It's not that I am too cheap, just don't want the company taking over my BB as they have some strange policies (although nothing too extreme). I just figure if I am paying and they aren't giving me any reimbursements or free devices (others get devices like they were going through water) then I am the master. Would love to be on the BES but they don't reimburseme me or give me special rules, I would be locked down like the others, and I am not footing the bill for that. My phone, my usage, end of story. I work for a fortune 500 company, but know all of the IT guys and the policies for email right now are pretty liberal, but if using their supplied devices they care to keep you under lock and key. I can't set up a BIS as the system excryption locks down the acess and keeps it changing, but they have no policy against forwarding outside (at least not yet). I can't reply through my work account, but could really care less about replying, I mainly care to read as that is how my boss gives us assignments and I hate to have things just pile up and get sprung on me all at once, as I was unavailable to read my mail. If I need to rely through the work account then I could either log onto my workstation, or to the web client from whereever. The BB just makes it handy to get the scoop in a pinch.

Re: UGH. Work Won't Link to Email

Sorry if that came across to YOU being too cheap, as it wasn't. It was more pointed to our clients who have an Exchange server already (which is the bulk of the investment) and then decide that they don't want or need a BES to go with it.

To me, those clients were dumb, as they had already purchased an Exchange Server, and you were able to get the "Baby BES", for no money invested except for the purchasing of the licenses to go with it.

I just don't understand how some of our clients can invest the thousands of dollars into an Exchange Server, however, won't invest $80 in each device for a license to get it on a SBE BES.

I don't blame you about not wanting to be on the BES, as that's why I carry 2 BB's, a work one and a personal one. No way I would ever put my personal BB on the company BES. Too much they can do.

No problem, as sometimes the wife accuses me of being too cheap as well, and she would know. I would love to get my own BES running at home (as you get the one free liscence from RIM), I would just need to get the Exchange server up and that is where the cheap part comes in, as of right now I can't justify the expense but I sure am trying to.

Maddy - Have you tried simply setting up you company email account on your phone? You can either go on line as suggested above or use the Set Up Email wizzard on your 8300.

Re: UGH. Work Won't Link to Email

I did try to set it up but it would not go through . . . Thank you to everyone for explaining things to me. I am not really a moron . . . I have actually taught endusers how to use software and I have been using computers for most of my life but this is all so new and strange. I know I have the power but until I can harness it . . . Well I feel like a boob.

As for where I work . . . I work for a private propriatary college with locations all across the US. We are given a monthly allowance ($200) to cover cell phone, business land line and internet (they also pay for my car). I visit a different high school each day and talk to kids about our programs and really just try to get them excitited about college -- we are a nitch school so it is not for everyone. Out of over 200 reps I am #2 in the country but I am not management nor do I want to be. I like to be connected and I like new toys and for free after rebate and equipment credit I could not turn down a Blackberry.

I understand about Outlook and the rules -- not feasible in my case. My company won't do it for me either and that is OK . . . I can still use the BB and go through webmail -- a pain but I can check on my breaks and that will be enough.

I am going to try and pick up the new edition of Blackberry for Dummies . . . I found the manual difficult because it does not show icons and I am a visual person.

If anyone knows a good and safe password storage program please share it with me and thank you again for all of your help.

    Hi Maddy

Check your application loader in desktop manager. Not sure about the 8310 OS but my 8100 has a Password Keeper program in the operating system applications.

You may also want to look over the programs sold here on Pinstack for a password vault that meets your needs.
