You must have missed the date on the article. That suit got settled and another company filed another patent suit against RIM. The mistake the second company made was they included Microsoft in the suit. I heard about the suit when it was filed and then didn't hear anything further. lol

Wow, that popped up from one of my buds to post - will be checking back shortly to fill in the pieces.
Glad you caught that, I was actually discussing this with some tmo folks who thought it was settled also.

Edit: Well, bud thought it was current. Guess I need to read that byline a bit better.
    Thanks aa and zo

    well there is yet another

    http://blackberrycool.com/2007/07/11/005058/

A California company by the name of Minerva Industries is suing RIM for a two patent infringements, relating to voice memo technology, phone cameras, GPS, and video recording. In the same stroke, Minerva is also suing Motorola and slew of others. From RIM, they’re seeking 5% to 7% of wholesale revenue stretching back to 2004. It’s not exactly NTP-scale, but considering this little company is nailing 43 others with this lawsuit, it’ll be interesting to see if it can make any restitutions from the whole thing. The patents in question are here and here.
I don't understand the part above about video recording...but they are going after ALOT of people

This is what will cost them the win, suing to much at the same time, they'll do a partnership for that suing and minerva industries will lost everything.

But these are my 2 cents

I really hope so, nothing I hate more than greedy little companies always looking for "that lawsuit". Just like the people that sue Google because someone posted something on a personal website and was searchable via google. They had nothing to do with it, but they have deep pockets so let's go after them! I hate it.

I hear ya Cliffr, but that's now one of the best way to make money, before we were hearing about people working real hard to start great fortune, now they just need to sue someone about an idea they supposely had before anyone.

Haven't you heard about the guy that tried to patent the wheel ?

Like that lady that sued McDonald's because her coffee was hot and she spilled it in her own lap due to her own stupidity by putting the cup between her legs while driving...I hope that stupidity burned really good!

It's not what RIM failed to file that cost them, it was their failure to do their research before they started paying royalties to NPT. What happened is that RIM was using a technology very similar to their's. NPT came up to them sometime prior to the lawsuit and spoke with RIM about it. Instead of RIM doing the research to find out if they were truly using patented technology in the first place they decided to pay a royalty to NPT. NPT then decided to get greedy and sued RIM. Due to the original Royalty agreement, RIM had basically stated that they were using their patented technology. Most of the suit dealt with how much money NPT deserved even though it was researched and found that RIM's technology had enough differences to qualify for a new patent.

The above info is according to our RIM representative at T-Mobile when asked about the suit while it was happening.

~via BB (wap.pinstack.com)~rim won't be going anywhere. They can be attacked for a long time before they fall, not to mention that most suits don't get vety far.

It helps that their largest customer happens to be the US Government.
