    Questions about unlocking

I have ATT and actually have no plans to change provider but I do travel a lot out of the country. Can I assume that if I want to use my phone with a SIM card overseas that i would need and unlock code and that would be provided for free?

Also is that unlock and one time event or does it need to be done more than once?

For AT&T, you'd only need to get the unlock code once and put it in. Your phone would be unlocked permanently after that. Just call in to the data support dept. and tell them you're going out of town. You'd need to prove that otherwise they're not going to give you the code.

Thanks for the help. I will probably want to get this done before my next trip.

I have been pretty happy with AT&T coverage and services. Plus they have a really discount for my company.

    Re: Questions about unlocking

I had this done in December. I told ATT I would be traveling overseas and wanted to unlock my phone so I could use a SIM card from a local provider.

They emailed me detailed unlock instructions within a business day, which worked flawlessly.

This was on a new ATT contract that I had had for just over a month. Hopefully you have the same positive experience!

That is good news. I have been a Cingular / ATT customer for about 8 years and just signed up again.

I will give them a call tomorrow when I get a chance.

They are pretty good about emailing you right away. Just make sure you get step by step directions and have them printed out before you go on your trip so that you can unlock it without having to go back to your email to check the instructions. I found that rather helpful.

Just a clarification -- when I called for an unlock code three weeks ago I didn't need to prove anything, I just told them I was planning to travel overseas. I had the code via email the next business day.

    Re: Questions about unlocking

I am a premier customer through my company so we get immediate service usually.

I just called and the operater gave me the code over the phone. I am now searching the forum for how to enter the code now.

    Thanks for the help.
