I have an unlocked 8300 (from o2) and I am using it on t-mobile uk network.
As far as I am concerned you have 160 symbols to use when writing a text. Yet I only have 70 symbols and if I write a longer one it just counts it as two texts any ideas how to sort it out? thanks for help in advance

Your SMS Text is set to use UCS2 coding instead of 7 bit.

On your BlackBerry, go to Options (which may be under Settings or Tools), and select SMS. Scroll down to the line Data Coding: so that UCS2 is highlighted, hit [Space] to change it to 7 bit. Now hit [Esc] (button to the RIGHT of the trackball) and select Save.

You should now have 160 characters available for SMS Messages.

One other thing that's come up related to this. On most BlackBerries, you will get up to six messages as part of a thread for really long messages, so when you're composing an SMS message, you should see:
    160 / 1 of 6
at the top of the screen - the first number indicating how many characters are left in the current message, and 1 of 6 indicating how many individual messages the text will take. However, apparently this is a provider feature not implemented by all providers and doesn't seem to have anything to do with the BlackBerry.

I did everything exactly as you said and...nothing's changed...
I previously had the 8700 and never had ny issues like this one. Especially that I do send a lot of texts, those really long ones as well...

that should work, try doing that and then a battery pull, does it happen when composing a new text or replying to a text.
