what would one need to do or be wary of if using an OS by a different provider?

Carrier is not important. What is important is that the OS is for your specific device, meaning you can't put the OS for an 8100 on your 8300....not even the 8310 or 8320 would work on your device.

When using another carrier's OS, you need to make sure you do what Step 5 says in this thread when upgrading your device.

I just upgraded my OS to the one offered by ATT. Its still at 4.2.3xx. I don't see any difference between that and what I had. What benefit is there to download the 4.5?

No, from what I understand, 4.6 and up is reserved for the new devices. The Javelin is replacing the Curve, 8220 is replacing the Pearl, Bold is replacing the 88xx series and those will all be OS 4.6 and above, including the new touchscreen Berry.

Uwaaaa I've played around with the Bold and its not that nice to compare to Curve...hope that my company could give a better price for Bold than i Might purchase...

Afoi, I've not personally used a Pearl. Some people prefer Pearl over the Curve and vice versa. Some people have one (or more) of each. It's a matter of taste. If you get a good deal on one, give it a try! You might like it!

    Help!!!

I downloaded the version 4.5 OS for my 8310 and now how do I put it on my Curve? It saved as just like a program that you install and installed like a new desktop manager. It said its the device software but I can't figure out how to put it on my BB? Any suggestions?

have you downloaded the Desktop Manager? You have to first install the OS software you downloaded. Then plug you device into the computer. Load the DM and open Application Loader. If the 4.5 is from a different provider, make sure you delete the 'vendor' file on the loader files. There is a thread in here somewhere on this. Can't remember
