The BlackBerry cameras are sensitive to IR, and they don't have significant IR filtering. You can test this by opening the camera application, getting a TV remote, and pushing buttons on the remote while looking at the IR LED in the camera application. The IR LED will appear to be blinking white on the BB display.
If you have an external IR illumination source, you should be able to take black and white photos in the IR spectral range, and record video as well.
CMOS sensors are sensitive to a much broader spectral range than the human eye. It's cheaper to add IR filters and/or do spectral sensitivity calibration in software (especially since CMOS sensor response is linear to photon density, whereas human retina response is exponential).
