I just tried downloading and installing the latest OS from the AT&T link on the page you provided, which is "BlackBerry Handheld Software v4.2.2.301 (Multilanguage), but it didn't work... my blackberry still says it's v4.2.2.166

The applications section is the version that shows up in options, about.
for instance the one you downloaded

    AT&T [formerly Cingular]
    v4.2.2.301 (Multilanguage) - Applications: 4.2.2.166; Platform: 2.4.0.73; Size: 78.10mb

means you would be running 4.2.2.166 OS just like you were before.

What happened when you installed the new att os? After the install it should have a check box to start the dm. You should then run the dm and it will start the update, if not you may have to start the application loader and next through it before it prompts you.

AT&T is supposedly releasing 4.5 this weekend (June 28). I'm not holding my breath, though.
