I don't know for sure but try taking out the memory card and checking the free space then. It probably reads the device memory then. I don't feel like taking my card out from under the battery right now. (that's one reason I have an 8gb)

Go to Options/Status and look at your "file free" that is your free memory on your device. It is listed in bytes, with 1,000,000 bytes being approx 1mb.

No need to remove the memory card, that is never included there. To find how much space is on the memory card go to Options/Media card.

If you're running the 4.5 software (if you're not, it should be available from your carrier momentarily), you should be able to go Options, Memory. What's listed for Application Memory is how much device memory is free. (on the Bold, this is a little confusing, as they list the 1GB onboard memory as device memory).

I have OS 4.5 running on my BBs and you still go to Options/Status to find your device memory. There is no Options/Memory. Perhaps Options/Memory is for the Bold and the newer BBs to be released, but for the Curve and Pearl anyway, it's still Options/Status even on 4.5.......

You might want to upgrade to 4.5.0.81; I did so on my curve, deleted most of my old messages, have at least 8 custom themes, and still have over 18MB of free device memory!!!

Thats a neat trick. I'm going to have to remember that.
