My keyboard does not light up when the backlight comes on? Am I missing a setting somewhere?

It is controlled by the light sensor hidden within the led. Try covering up the led with your finger and see what that does

I noticed my backlight doesnt come on after a soft reset. Once the screen turns off and a button is pressed then the keyboard light comes on. Then it works properly after that.

I tryed both of those things to no avail. There is always a dim red light on in the led even though I have no new messages. I'm starting to wonder if I have a hardware issue.

OK new update, I did a restart by pressing alt shift del. As it was restarting the key board light came on but as soon as the OS loaded it stopped working

    Heya,
A few questions, what OS are you on?
    Has the backlight ever worked?
Did you install any apps or an OS upgrade recently and it stopped working after that?
Have you tried a battery pop (for 30 seconds) and back in?

re: the Dim red light: may be a notification (do you have any unchecked/unopened notifications (ie email, calendar, SMS etc.)

Go into Options (wrench) and then Screen/Keyboard.
There is a section for Screen and keyboard settings:
    Backlight Brightness
    Backlight Timeout

    etc.
Check to see if they are set the way you want.
Is the LED coverage Indicator ON?

I have done a restart by removing the battery and I have checked all the backlight settings. I have tried led indicator on and off. I tried to update the OS with the desktop software but it tells me that I am using the latest software. I am running 4.3.0.127. Should I try to get 4.5

The only time the keyboard light has ever worked is when its rebooting

Do a backup of the device to ensure all your data and settings are saved. Then wipe it and then do a reactivation and restore your data etc.

If that does not work, then go for an upgrade:
    Link to upgrade info

If it still does not work and is still under warranty I would try returning (if your company allows or privately owned).
