no its not harmful ive upgraded mine twice.. i got a pearl runnin on T-Mobile .107 and im a T-mobile customer but before that i had upgraded to a at&t OS... just make sure you get rid of the Vendor.xml file in the RIM folder on your computer... but you can search the stacks for a thread on how to do an OS upgrade.... but its ok

Its not harmful to install and OS from other carriers but im not sure about from fforeign OS. Give it a try delete the vendor.xml file to get your dm to find the OS

Will changing to a different vendors software allow my phone to become unlocked?

no your phone will still be locked to your service provider... unlocking a phone is a totally different thing

And you don't want to update a 8320 OS with a 8300 OS. The vendor doesn't matter (as long as it has a language you can understand) but the device model does.

Does upgrading an OS remove all of your applications... or do they all persist? Also, what about BES service... does that need to be reloaded?

if you need to mail back in your phone at any point for replacement, be sure to return your OS to one of the versions provided by your service provider. by installing a foreign OS you can void the warranty.

no it will not unlock the device, just think of this as Windows and installing different versions is just going between different versions of Windows.
