    Installed Messengers don't use SMS?

I just read in another thread where someone stated that the preinstalled Yahoo, AIM and Googletalk messengers on the Curve don't use SMS. Is this correct? I had the Pearl with T-Mobile and the preinstalled messengers definitely used SMS for IMs. has this changed?

If you have data, I believe that's what they all use. Otherwise they'll use SMS.

No the curve and ones preinstalled on the newer models use data. the Oz messengers use sms. New 8120 coming out on tmo though will have newer rim versions of messengers

From what I know, the OZ Instant Messenging app uses SMS. Ramble IM and Jivetalk use data. There are other apps out there as well, but I prefer the ones that use data instead of SMS.

Oz uses the old service of IM over txt. This was way back before phone internet was possible. Even old phones like the 3390 nokia and others were able to IM over SMS. Now with servers and other things adding complexity to the issue, there are more options in chat. Pic transfer, etc are not avail over SMS so they WILL be more and more akin to using the data connection.
