UPDATE - the saga is over. After an hour on the phone with TMO support and having uninstalled the DM and the OS and then reinstalled. TMO could not figure out what was wrong. They sent service books, re-freshed my Blackberry on their system - nothing worked. Still not able to send or receive emails. They passed me over to RIM support. 3 minutes later my Blackberry was in business. RIM resent service books and somehow forced blackberry to accept them. Thanks to everyone who offered help. You were all correct in your analysis it just took a bigger hammer from RIM to make it work.
