    Inexplicable mystery re BB

I need the community's help to solve a perplexing mystery that has befallen me regarding a blackberry of unkown origins. Here goes:

Two weeks ago, I found an AT&T Blackberry 8800 in a taxi cab on the way to work. I looked through the contacts, only to find 10. I find two emails messages in the one email address associated with the device. Being particularly busy that day, I chose only to email the person. I simply stated that I found the BB and that the owner should come pick it up at the front desk of my office. I left the BB with the front desk.

Later that evening a woman came and picked up the phone. (I was in my office during this whole thing. This info was relayed to me by frontdesk later). She took the phone, sat in the lobby, fiddled with the phone for 3 minutes, got up, asked the ladies at the frontdesk for my name, then left. The front desk let me know the woman had picked it up. I then proceeded to completely forget about the incident. Here is where it gets freaking wierd.

The day before yesterday I get a beautiful bouquet of flowers sent to the front desk with my name on it. There is no card. (Others were commenting that the bouquet was at least $60.00). At first, I had no idea who they came from. I asked half a dozen people, including my gf [who was pissed] before I concluded that it was likely from the BB lady. I went ahead and found the email address in my outbox and sent a short email thanking her for her nice gesture.

Two hours later, I get a call from the front desk.

Frontdesk: "A man is here to pick up his blackberry."
Me: "What? What do you mean? That lady already came and picked it up."
    Frontdesk: "I know!"
Me: "What? Well, what do you mean then?"
Frontdesk: "I don't know. There is a man here to pick up his lost blackberry."

I go down to the front desk to see a man, late 40s, in a suit, well kept, with a calm look on his face. He explained to me that he had gotten an email thanking someone for flowers. And when he had scrolled down through the email, the email history had shown my original email (I had attached the original email to remind the person who I was).

The man then claims that this lost BB is his!

I asked, "Well, why didn't you respond to my original email? The email regarding picking up the device?" He then proceeded to tell me that he never got the original email. Why, might you ask? Well, the email address was not his!!! He then pulls out a new BB Curve and says, "See, this is my new BB. And here is your new email regarding the flowers (with lost BB info attached)."

Me: "Well, if this isn't your email, how did you possibly get this email on your new BB!!?!"
    Man: "I have no idea."
Me: *WTF is going on here. This makes no f*#&*&# sense.* "What do you mean you have no idea?"
Man: "It just appeared in my BB."
    Me: "Uhhhhh, yea. Hmm. Ok."

I check the email for myself. And indeed, it is just in his messages folder. It isn't forwarded to him. It is from me, and to the woman's email address. (Bear in mind, the woman's email address is a woman's first name, followed by a last name @aol.com). We exchanged a couple more minutes of meaningless jibberjabber. I gave him all the info I had. And he proceeded to leave. I was confused.

I checked the woman's name on google--interesting--softcore pornstar. Wha??? No, there are a lot of people with this name. I check with the frontdesk. She was about 50-something. Ok. Not a pornstar. I then call the florist, and ask for any information about the sender. They aren't allowed to release information, but there was a card!! A card that never made it!! It was from the BB woman thanking me profusely for returning the BB. Hmm. Ok. Great, doesn't tell me anything. All I know now is that the flowers weren't from some crazy stalker/admirer. I'm still lost.

Now, I'm left feeling unsettled. I just want to know what the hell is going on here. Who is lying? Why? I have some theories, but I'm going to hold off until I hear some of your theories.

I think it'd make for a good movie!

Seriously, I'll read it again carefully when I have a bit more time and see what theories I can come up with. Very mysterious indeed!

The confusing part is how the woman received the first email and then received the second one and they are both sent to the same address. It could be that the woman is an email proxy for the man, i.e works for him or checks his emails. We have that at work (you can set up and email proxy). Or maybe a while ago he had setup some filter on aol to fwd his emails to another address and it just happened to be that woman's email. Either way the man and the woman know each other ~via BB (wap.pinstack.com)~

Maybe it's a new twist on one of the Nigerian scams (e.g., "I am the widow of the last president of Nigeria, and need your help to get $50 million out of the country, for which I will gladly pay you, a complete but trusted stranger, 25%...").

Perhaps there's some intention to draw you into their little circle as this story unfolds. Of course, having read dozens and dozens of murder mysteries, and having a fertile imagination, I can imagine the protagonist (hopefully not you!) being lured to a dinner at a discrete little Italian restaurant, only to discover that the wine was drugged (rohypnol?), leading up to you passing out and waking up on somebody's vivisection table in a dungeon somewhere. All because you were nice enough to return somebody's lost blackberry...

    Just in time for Halloween.....

Really, I don't think you should worry about it. You did what any reasonanle person would and could do. I wouldn't try and sort it out. You did what you could, and you did the right thing.

Now, its out of your hands.
