Sounds like they pressured you into something you didn't need to do for their commission. On the AT&T site it has the full retail price without contract (if they required some sort of reference). Quite a few posters picked it up without signing a new contract.. you might want to report them.

I would go back in and talk with the worker, explain that you found out you could have bought it without a contract and that you do not appreciate being given wrong information and that he or she rectify the situation. If they don't, talk to the manager and throw around terms like "fraudulent practices".

I have a feeling something good will be worked out in your favor and that slick worker will be thinking twice before suckering an unknowing customer for commission.

So sounds like you didn't even have at&t before buying? Are you saying they wouldn't let you buy it out right and you had to sign a contract with them to get the curve?

If so just cancel the new line and unlock it to your origninsl carrier

Why the secret? What's the name of the store. I'd love to go by there and have someone try to push that racket on me.

See, I didn't think so. So why are we telling this guy that he got sucked into a contract? It seems like the cheapest way to get one is with a contract.

Err.. I don't think you're quite grasping the situation..

they told him they wouldn't give him the phone without purchasing a contract.

    that is not company policy.

In CA you have 30 days for buyers remorse. I would go back explain tothe manager you were baited into adding a new line.

Re: I walked out with a blackberry curve!!

Sounds to me like they made him activate a 2nd line of service to cancel later. They've tried that on me as well. The reps want to sandbag the hot phones for "new" customers becuase they make nothing just selling hardware out right. I understand it, but it's bascially not right. You can't pick and choose who you sell your wares to in a public retail store. If they put a price on it and you are willing to pay for it, they have to sell it. And it's first come first serve unless they've agreed to take an advance order or reserved one for you.

One thing that does help the rep out and reduce the hassle of buying outright is to offer to by an accessory or two. Again, that's a choice you should make. Otherwise they are there to sell you their product. Ask for a Manager and you'll get the device. It's like when you buy a car. The dealership isn't going to NOT sell you a car just because the salesman may not make a commission on your deal. You aren't really taking food out of their mouths. They don't get too many people willing to plunk down FULL retail for their phones. Heck, I hear them hard selling $99 phones all the time with a contact and still can't close the deal.

Just stick to your guns and demand the sale of the product. When you go in the store don't tell them that you are an exsisting customer until they bring out the device. Otherwise, some of them will lie to you and tell you they are "out of stock" or they are all reserved.
    Just because I don't care doesn't mean I don't understand. -Homer
