how to pay less than full retail?

just thought i'd bounce this idea off of you stackers...

i'm thinking of getting the curve, but i basically have to pay full retail ($449) since i already have an account paid for by my company...

    what if i...
    - buy the curve on amazon (currently $99.99) with new contract
    - cancel the contract once i receive it
    - don't return the phone (or report it lost)
    - just accept the $250 equip discount fee
    - put in my own sim card

it would be a total of $350 instead of $449+tax, wouldn't it?

will i get hit with the $200 early termination fee on top? i'd be within the 14-day policy...

can they render the blackberry useless if they wanted to?

    thanks.

I would read the fine print. I know our in store policy is a $300 fee if you cancel the service early....especially if you don't return the phone.

You have to keep it for 181 days before you can cancel the contract and move the sim card to your current account. It would be easier to get it at tmobile.

Go to craigs list and get one there. Or just go chat up someone at the store, tell them what's going on and ask if they will cut you a deal.

chat up someone at the store? you mean a manager or a customer thinking of buying?

i was at the tmo store yesterday and they said there are no discounts... $449+tax would be the price i pay...

amazon has a $250 equip discount fee that they'll charge if you don't meet certain requirements... that is what i'd be willing to pay...

also, if you cancel/return the phone within 14 days you're out of the contract... but what happens if you legitimately lose it and you want out anyway?

if you lose it, call tmobile and do a buyers remorse, and tell them you dont want the service anymore, and just take the 250 dollar fee from amazon, thats what really happen anyway if you lost it "legitimately"

Just pay for it. Sounds too much like theft by deception. ~via BB (wap.pinstack.com)~

    it's just a potential loophole...

looks like it may not be worth the hassle to save ~$130 as they may disable the device anyway, huh?

The pin can be disabled even though the phone can't. Disabled pin means no data.

yeah but not to many companys actually report the pins...... especially if you can get it unlocked, then RIM cant lock the pin because it is a released beast at that point...thats what happend with my pearl when i got it stolen, they told me they couldnt lock the pin because the phone had been unlocked

Re: how to pay less than full retail?

thats why i asked what company dan has currently because if he has been with TMOBILE for longer than 90 days they will give him the unlock code, all you have to do is get the phone write down the IMEI and give it to them, and they will send you directions via email and then call tmobile later on and do a buyers remorse return on the phone number, and keep the phone... I did that with wirefly for my 8800
