Question Help: How to convert & load jar to BlackBerry 8310 ?

    Hi all,

I'm novice user with BlackBerry 8310 - one month only!
I found one simple application (jar file) and need to install it to my BB.

    So, I have some questions:
    1. How to convert jar file to cad file to prepare for loading to BB?
    2. How to load/install converted cad file to BB?
    3. Do I have to register loaded cad file in RIM? If yes, then how?

Please, reply me in detail (step by step).

    Thank you,

    bbnew

Not sure why you want a cad file ...
Otherwise you have a few options --
    1) JAR -> ALX
Step1: Conver jar to alx using program at http://brandon.berryreview.com/j2a.html
Step2: Load alx file to blackberry using the latest blackberry desktop manager (labeled Blackberry Desktop Software)

    2) Use JAR file itself
Users report that if you copy the jar file to your phone memory card you can load it directly from there.
Steps: Copy jar file to media card
    Goto Media icon and select.
Hit the menu button and select Explore.
Locate file and select it .. it should proceed to install your program.

    Hope that helps.

Thank you Samba for your advices!

After your reply I'm not sure too (jar or cad).

BTW: I found another way to convert here in Blackberry Mini FAQ:
    http://forums.pinstack.com/f227/blackberry_8300_mini_faq_common_issues-42861/
I already converted jar due to this source and found that size of converted cad large twice (!?)

    So, I'll try both variants.

But you are not reply on my 3-rd question - about new application registration necessity.:-(

    Hi Samba!

Yesterday I have bought MicroSD 4GB for my BlackBerry 8310.
I installed converted cad file and application working well.
But I found that size of cad file bigger twice compare with original jar file.
Therefore, I more interesting to install smaller jar instead of large cad.

I copied jar to MicroSD card and tried to found out it through BB Media icon as you advised above.
But I don't see jar there -> four folders: Music, Video, Ring Tones, and Pictures. And Media itself too.
As I understand these folders located in the BB memory - not in the MicroSD.

    There are my new questions:
    1. Where is exactly place/folder in the MicroSD I have to put jar file?
    2. Where I have to see jar from BB Media folder/sub folders?
    3. Can you give me link(s) where 'Users reports ...'?

    Thanks again!

    Hi bbnew,
Sorry this is such a painful process for you! I hope at the end of it all your jar file is acutally compatible with 8310s otherwise no matter what you do its not going to work!!

    1. Where is exactly place/folder in the MicroSD I have to put jar file?
You can place the jar file in any of the existing folders technically .. I personally created a folder called 'programs' and store them there.

    2. Where I have to see jar from BB Media folder/sub folders?
Depends where you put the file. I think the links below will make things clearer.

    3. Can you give me link(s) where 'Users reports ...'?

    Hi Samba,

Thank you very much for your help!

    I got it!

mindphreak from your second link gave great sequence of actions.
I followed them and copied/installed my jar files quickly.
Two jar applications are working now!

BTW: That means 'jar file is acutally compatible with 8310s ...'?

And during installation I saw next BB message:
'This application does not contain a signature. It might not be from a trusted source. Do you want to proceed? Yes/No' (I click on [Yes]).

Can you explain - is compatible have the same sense as signature?
    And what both are mean?

by "is compatible" I mean some applications are phone specific .. for example certain applications are made for the blackberry storm and they will not work on an 8310.

"signature" normally means the app has been verified as authentic and supported by the company/person who made it. 3rd party apps often do not have signatures .. doesn't mean they are evil programs .. its more of a "install at your own risk" situation.

    @BBnew,

Just so you know, when you install jar files from the media app they'll still be converted into COD files and take up more space.

Also, not all jar files will be compatible. Jar is just a file extension - a Java mobile file package. Depending on the classes the Java file requires it may or may not be compatible with your BB so some jar files will work and others will throw errors when you try to convert them.

Samba has given you good information, enjoy your BB.
