Hold down the ALT key while dialing and hit the letters. Your BB will do the work from there.

    GREAT tip! Thanks alot!

I've seen other people suggest taking a photo of a telephone, then viewing it to allow you to convert the letters to numbers....

Think I like your method MUCH better!

    Thanks

Guess that depends on who's standing next to the telephone in the photo!

This is actually a feature that was installed in the 8700 and has carried over since then. I know on my 8700 I don't have to hit the alt key. I just dial as normal and the unit recognizes that I am not dialing numbers anymore and will convert it automatically for me.

I have the 8700g. I have to hold the alt button or it won't dial letters.

    Re: dial 1-800-mattress>????

While I dial, it shows symbols but automatically begins converting them to letters. I don't know if this is a change in the 4.2 OS because I can't recall it automatically looking through my phone book when I dial before on the 4.1 OS. As I dial it pulls up my phone book and attempts to match anything I put to a name in my phonebook. If it doesn't it then checks and verify's that all my key presses correspond to a number. If they don't then it converts them to letters.

Edit: Just tested it and found that if I dial 800 first, then yes I have to press the alt key but if I just dial a name it doesn't require it.

Looks like you can hold alt or the cap button, either will allow you to type letters.

    Thumbs up Simple Solution

Google for QWERTYConvert - this software enables you to dial vanity numbers like 1800-FLOWERS from your blackberry

Blackberry's have a built in QWERTY convertor. You just have to press the alt button before each letter and type it in direct in letter format. The software will then convert the letters to the appropriate numeric sequence. This works even when in a call (for those pesky automated systems that want you to hunt using letters instead of numbers.)
