    Desktop Software

I am new to the Blackberry (I expect delivery in a few days). One reason I bought this was because, like the Palm Pilot, I want to take advantage of the Blackberry Desktop Software. I went to the Blackberry web site, but I am not sure which version to download. My service is ATT.

Will you be using the BES or the BIS? I would probably downlaod the latest version 4.2.2.14, although you can download the 4.3 version as I have heard it works as well, although I haven't updated to it yet. SOmeone else who knows better may correct me if I am wrong (in fact I hope they do, so that I don't make a stupid mistake myself).

Some of the refurbs from AT$T don't come with the software, so it can't hurt to have the latest already loaded and ready to go when the new tool arrives. Aso some of the versions that were included with some vendors weren't the latest or they had bugs that caused the device to have problems (ie the AT$T red Pearl came with defective disk and it was a known issue that AT$T told people to just goto the RIM site and download the latest, not bashing AT$T but that is where the majority of my experience come from asI just recently aquired T-Mo service).

For right now I'd just get the latest 4.2 dm available. I'd stay away from the CD's that ship with the phone they have been causing issues.

The latest DM and recommended would be located here:
    https://www.blackberry.com/Downloads...93E4F3BB068C22
This is DM 4.3 in the dropdown menu
I don't recommend loading the one that came on the CD that comes with your BB.

Thanks. I usually don't load the absolute latest version for fear of bugs, but it looks like the 4.2 is the way to go for now. I can always upgrade later.

I've been using 4.3 and it has worked flawlessly for me, but 4.2 is fine as well.

Not sure if you know this or not, but the BB Desktop Manager is NOTHING like the Palm Desktop software. The BB DM is only the conduit to sync your BB with Outlook, Lotus GroupWise, Agenda, and a couple other applications. There is no contact manager or calendar app like in the Palm Desktop.

I also suggest you read through the FAQ as there is quite a lot of good info there to help you get up and running with minimal hair pulling.

I can handle that. I actually like Outlook and use it often.

I have Office 2007 Professional and think it is has made great strides. I agree about the functionality, although sometimes it is hard to get around as the settings and links for certain things are not where you would think they are, or were within 2003.

    Re: Desktop Software

With me it wasn't so much the ribbons as it was the labels, as certain titles such as View and Edit are not how they lable them at the top toolbar like they did in 2003, the labels are all renamed. Love the layout of Word though.
