CURVE 8310 from ATT using with T-Mobile issues...

    Hey,
I recently purchased a BB Curve 8310 from ATT. I got it unlocked and Im using it with my T-Mobile service. Im trying to get the internet fuctionality to work (was hoping to use the Opera Mini browser that I have installed) But more so, Id just like to get Jive Talk working. I changed the TCP settings and changed the APN to wap.voicestream.com and left the login and password areas blank. Now I do not have a BB plan selected on my phone. I have my regular minutes plan and have added unlimited texts and the $5.99 TZones Web pack. Do I need anything else for this to work? My friend recently did this and did not add any of the BB plans but the email one which is $9.99. He doesnt remember if he added the T-Zones web pack or not. Either way, Im stuck with a lower case edge logo on the top and neither jive talk or opera mini will connect/work. Please advise. Thanks guys.

Yeah to access your TCP/APN i'm pretty sure you need at least the email plan...Tzones does you no good at all. So i think you answered your own question. Get the email plan or a BB plan

So are there any other steps that I must take besides getting the email plan? Also, if I just get the email plan, does this mean only Jive talk will work or will Opera mini also work? Im trying not to spring for the $20 data/email plan if I can avoid it. I have already changed the apn/tcp settings. Please let me know ASAP.

Sorry, I have no idea if the applications will work with the Email plan only. Opera should work with just the tzones plan i believe. As long as the APN is set correctly. JiveTalk may require the full plan. I really can't help since I've never tried this.

Question Re: CURVE 8310 from ATT using with T-Mobile issues...

Ok, Ive just added the email for 9.99 I guess it will have to be touch and go and see if it works. Do I need any special settings in JiveTalk? It gets to the part where it says getting key and just times out. Let me know. Thanks.

You have to get the $20 BB Plan. The $5.99 T-Zones plan will not work on a BB to access the internet.

Question Re: CURVE 8310 from ATT using with T-Mobile issues...

Ok, I have added the $9.99 BlackBerry Email plan from tmobile. Now, the edge has been capitalized to EDGE and the TZones browser works, even though I removed the $5.99 T-Zones web package. Opera still wont connect and gives me an error to go to my desktop pc and go to there site. Jive talk just times out when it says getting a key. I try to do a Ping Server in Jive talk but I get "Ping Server Result: Failed" I think I have connectivity to the net now, but my settings may be possibly wrong. I changed the wap.voicestream.com APN thing and left the L/P blank. Will upgrading to the $19.99 package really fix everything? It seems like everything should be working now that i have EDGE in caps. Please let me know or if anyone has tried this before. Thanks again guys.

about a year ago, T-Mobile put the EDGE in all capital letters meaning that you can send/receive MMS WITHOUT the Data Plan....that's why you still have t-zones.
BEFORE, all BB devices had to purchase the $20 data plan even if they wanted to send MMS, but not do any of the other BB services. Trust me, my wife and I both had 8100's and was pissed that we pay $19.95 for unlimited text messages and couldn't send MMS.

It is good to know that the $5.99/month internet doesn't work, I almost did that!

As far as I know you need a BB data plan to get the internet and 3rd party apps to work.

I really think Melissa is right. I have seen tons of posts from folks claiming they got this or that work-around to work (and just as many that failed to) but at the end of the day if you want data you need a BB Data Plan. Fortunatly for you, TMO has the cheapest around @ 19.99/month and supports tethering as well.
