Does leaving your browser (Opera Mini) and/or IM (Jivetalk) connected drain your battery faster? What about when your phone is put in it's holster and goes into idle?

leaving any running program in the background will have some effect on battery life but the holster should help combat that. it is one of the ftrs of the holster to idle the phone to save battery.

I haven't noticed a battery drain issue with the two programs you mentioned but Eddie_guage is right, the more programs running the greater the battery drain.

I use jivetalk all day everyday and don't have any real battery drain. You can go into preferences and select battery save mode when idle. I'm sure that will give your battery some relief.

I've found that signal strength has a big effect on battery drain. I live in an area where Verizon signal is poor, & that seems to tun my batt down fast. If I'm using JiveTalk all day in an area where I have EVDO coverage I can be logged in to JiveTalk & several apps w little battery impact. Hope that helps.

I find that Java apps in general consume power at a faster rate than navite BB apps, too. Hold down the [Alt] key and press the Escape key and see what you left running. Then go to those extra applications and close them. I don't know if there was a way to "Close all closeable applications" on the BB.
