First off you'll need BlackBerry Desktop Manager, which can be obtained from here https://www.blackberry.com/Downloads/browseSoftware.do

Second of all, what carrier do you have? You should also install the BlackBerry Device OS on your computer so you can recover your phone, etc.

Carrier doesn't matter. MODEL is what matters. You can go here http://blackberryforums.pinstack.com...ad.php?t=42263

to get the latest 4.2 OS for the 8310.

You can go to http://www.blackberry.com to get the DM download.

Unless you want to go through and teach every newbie about deleting vendor.xml files and how installing the WRONG CARRIERS OS can breach the warranty of their device then I'd suggest he use the REAL OS for his device.
AT&T downloads are located from here https://www.blackberry.com/Downloads...E4F82F9F00E7D4

OK---it doesn't breach a warranty! LOL....and it's as simple as what you said...delete the vendor xml file.

there are simple steps listed in this forum.

    So---carrier does not matter.

And besides---I was once a newbie who had several stackers who were kind, patient and KNOWLEDGEABLE hold my hand and walk me through the simple (now) process of upgrading my OS....so yes, I am more than willing to teach every newbie out there how to do it.

I'm sorry to sound rude but you really do need to check your sources for this info. First of all carrier information is embedded into the each independant OS itself, anyone that knows where to find this info can find it. If its detected the carrier will not help at all.

Second lets use vodaphone for example. Vodaphone has OS4.5 out for numerous phones and it is a certified by them. However you're saying that if a user bricks their phone(Using this OS for the 8310) and their carrier discovers that 4.5.0.37 is on that phone but not certified with them yet they will still honour a replacement...I think not.

Yep have to agree to with this. OS should come from the carriers site. He shouldn't be attempting this until he is an advanced user and knows all of the consequences that could happen, although I would be willing to help walk him through this.
