If you have the device software installed on your PC try this: run Desktop manager/hook up your bb via usb/ select the load application option/ scroll down to the box that reads bbmessenger (it's probably unselected) select the box/ select next/finish/ let the phone reboot and it should come back on.
What's the matter? CIA's got you pushing too many pencils?

You could check and make sure it's not hidden on the main screen, or in an Instant messaging, or application folder....On your main menu hit your BB button and select "show all."

If it makes you feel any better. I was one of the guinea pigs who was eager to have bbm5 running on my recently obtained 8900 and I lost all my contacts when downgrading because the darn thing was so glitchy and it was a horrible upgrade from my current version. I have more important priorities than smilies and avatar displays on bbm. I want stability. I loaded onto my g/f's 8900 as well and I had to install my OS on my pc then load hers and then repair the damage. Not a fun thing to do. 3 hours wasted for vanity . So, I do understand your anger. I'm still puzzled as to how you lost the icon though. Sure you didn't upgrade to the (crappy) bb5? I mean beta? Anyway, even if you did and can't find the icon that's the only way to get the icon back. Sorry dude

Try resending your service books in your email settings. If this doesn't work try options < advance options< host router table click menu then register.
