    Does anyone know how this works. There is no adjustment for time, only to shut off/on.

    is that what you mean by "shut off/on"?
    the backlight is controlled by the light outside. If its sunny the screen brightens and if its dark it dims. The sensor is located where the LED indicator is

    What do you mean by the last line. My 8330 is diming/brighting at will (no light change). Where is the sensor. Maybe I am inadvertanly covering.

    The LED indicator is in the top right side of the device, cover that with your thumb and see if it changes.
