Can you make calls and surf the net on EV-DO phones?
My understanding is that you can't which is a good enough reason for me never to switch from GSM to Verizon/Sprint.

No, at&t is the only digital and voice network. You can be on a call and surf the web on EDGE, UMTS and HSDPA. Not sure about GPRS though...
Cingular is now the new at&t

yes, UTMS & HSDPA aren't the only game in town. there are several forms of 3rd generation mobile networks aimed at high speed data transfer and within each form there are different grades of it. Like with CDMA networks sprint and verizon both have Evdo. the initial release was Rev 0, then last year sprint rolled out Rev. A which improved the speeds and I think Verizon now also has Rev. A.

Yes, that should be a feature of GSM based networks (so T-mobile should be the same), one of the reasons (beside international roaming) why I didn't want to switch over to Verizon, even though it has faster data.
I can be on the train, surf the web/send e-mail and chat with someone at the same time.

If I'm on a call, I can't open my browser and surf, send emails, or chat on BB messenger. Everything will wait until my call finishes. When I hang up I get a flood of messages. The browser actually puts up a message, "cannot browse while in a call..." I'm on ATT and on EDGE.

I guess I'll have to try "alt-tabing" and see if you can do it simultaneously but I believe the difference is also that you phone will be unavailable with ev-do while you surf unlike edge and co.
Maybe that's only marketing? Lol. I'll have my friend on Sprint try the browser just before I call him.
I never really bothered finding the truth but this thread made me wonder
