I know they all suck; that's not the answer I'm looking for.

start with what carrier you use. If you are in the US and on Tmobile or AT&T they offer OZ Messenger which will allow you to do AIM, Yahoo, and MSN all via SMS. There are a few threads around this forum for that if you wish to read more about them

because the RIM AIM client is not open to all carriers yet, and some of us don't believe in paying for JiveTalk for just one or two people to chat with. And since I have unlimited data and unlimited SMS/MMS it doesn't matter to me (or others in similar boats) which bucket it uses

The problem is that my phone only came with BB Messenger (to talk with other BB users).

    Oh well, thanks though.

well you still didn't answer the question for us to further help. OZ Messenger (if available with your mystery carrier) would allow you to use SMS and connect to AIM/Yahoo/MSN

Question Re: AIM app that uses SMS?

How do you get OZ messenger to work though?

I have a BB Curve 8300 with AT&T with OZ messenger installed but can not get connected to the either IM provider offered through OZ.

Yeah I have been having some issues lately with it no logging me on. I have tried deleting it and reinstalling and it still won't work. It worked when I initially downloaded it. I will let u know if I come up with a solution. ~via BB Curve (wap.pinstack.com)~

Re: AIM app that uses SMS?

I wonder if AT&T is having issues with their SMS gateway for this service... seems quite a few users having the same problem. I would call them and inquire
